Indianapolis, Ind. - The Horizon League announced its Fall Academic All-League teams today, honoring 43 student-athletes for their work in the classroom during the 2004-2005 academic year.
Six three-time and 14 two-time selections highlight the 2004 Fall All-Horizon League Team. In all, 43 student-athletes, including 20 returnees from the 2003 squad, were selected: men's cross country (8), women's cross country (7), volleyball (6), women's soccer (11) and men's soccer (11).
Butler led the League with 11 academic honorees. Loyola (7), UW-Green Bay (7) and UW-Milwaukee (6) landed at least five honorees followed by Detroit (4), Cleveland State (2), Wright State (2) and Youngstown State (2).
The Fall Academic All-Horizon League Teams are selected by the Horizon League Sports Information Directors and Faculty Athletic Representatives. Nominees must meet the following criteria: 1) a cumulative grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.25 or better on a 4.00 scale; 2) have completed at least three semesters at the same institution; and 3) be a starter or significant contributor in a League-sponsored sport. The team is comprised of the same number of first team All-Horizon League student-athletes in each sport. Ties are not broken.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
UIC's Mikhail Davidyan, UW-Green Bay's Seth Bodden, UW-Milwaukee's Josh Nygren and Wright State's Cory Scheadler headline the All-Academic men's cross country team as two-time Academic All-League selections. In addition, Butler's Andrew Sherman and Nick Goodliffe and Loyola's Steve Sebelski and Andrew McQuillan are all new members this season.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
The women's cross country team features three two-time Academic All-Horizon League selections, Butler's Monica Behney and Monika Schneider and UW-Milwaukee's Anna Christian. Rounding out the remainder of the team is first-time selections Butler's Victoria Mitchell, UIC's Lisa Petty, Loyola's Maureeca Lambert and Youngstown State's Emily Schnitkey.
VOLLEYBALL
Cleveland State's Jamie Bouyer, a three-time All-Academic selection, highlights the six person All-Academic volleyball team. UW-Green Bay's Leslie Kuhn and UW-Milwaukee's Karen Fruit both return as two-time honorees while Butler's Kali Carter, UW-Green Bay's Krystle Lange and Youngstown State's Abby Ettenhofer are all new selections.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
The women's soccer All-Academic Team is headlined by three-time selections Detroit's Alison Dube and Loyola's Heather Joseph. Also returning for the second year is Butler's Kate Lord and UW-Green Bay's Ashley Hemmen. Also selected to the team is Butler's Marcie Stucky, Detroit's Mary Parker, Loyola's Katie O'Connell, UW-Green Bay's Allison Brunner and Stephanie Gross, UW-Milwaukee's Kerri St. Aubin and Wright State's Mary Beth Young.
MEN'S SOCCER
The men's soccer team is highlighted by six repeat selections, including three-time honorees Butler's Andrew Pancio, Detroit's Ablaye Camara and UW-Milwaukee's Antou Jallow. Returning for the second time is Butler's John Mariscalco, Loyola's Joe Nierzwicki, and UW-Green Bay's Adam Ben-Zikri while Butler's Patrick Reilly, Cleveland State's Harveer Mann, Detroit's Jason Massoglia, Loyola's Eric Spiess and UW-Milwaukee's Neil Dombrowski round out the rest of the squad.
