Indianapolis, Ind. - The Horizon League announced its Spring Academic All-League teams today, honoring 78 student-athletes for their work during the 2004-2005 academic year.
Thirty-two honorees return to the 2005 Spring All-Horizon League Team from last year, while seven are three-time selections. In all, 78 student-athletes were selected: baseball (11), softball (12), men's golf (6), women's golf (6), men's tennis (6), women's tennis (6), men's outdoor track and field (13) and women's outdoor track and field (18).
Youngstown State led the League with 16 academic honorees, while Butler followed with 14. UIC added 10 and Cleveland State, Loyola, Detroit and Wright State each landed eight student-athletes apiece. UW-Green Bay and UW-Milwaukee followed with three student-athletes per school.
The Spring Academic All-Horizon League Teams are selected by the Horizon League Sports Information Directors and Faculty Athletic Representatives. Nominees must meet the following criteria: 1) a cumulative grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.25 or better on a 4.00 scale; 2) have completed at least three semesters at the same institution; and 3) be a starter or significant contributor in a League-sponsored sport. The team is comprised of the same number of first-team All-Horizon League student-athletes in each sport. Ties are not broken.
BASEBALL
Chris Snyder of Wright State returns from the 2004 All-Academic baseball team along with Brandon Caipen and Kevin Libeg of Youngstown State. Caipen also captured All-Horizon League first team honors this season.
SOFTBALL
The softball team features seven two-time Academic All-Horizon League selections in Cleveland State's Grace Luginbuhl and J.J. Thornberry, Detroit's Anna Ollgaard, UIC's Cameron Astiazaran and Joyce Cathey, Loyola's Allison Scanlin and UW-Green Bay's Michelle Kaminski. Ollgaard, Astiazaran and Scanlin are three-time selections as they debuted on the list in 2003.
Earlier this spring, Luginbuhl, Ollgaard, Astiazaran, Cathey, Scanlin and Lindsay Roy of Detroit all landed spots on the All-Horizon League team. Astiazaran was named Player of the Year, while Luginbuhl earned co-Pitcher of the Year honors.
MEN'S GOLF
Butler's Will Turner returns from the 2004 All-Academic team, while Loyola's Dan Mattingly makes his third consecutive appearance on the list. Making his All-Academic team debut is Ben Grandy of Cleveland State who received All-League honors at the 2005 Golf Championships.
WOMEN'S GOLF
The women's golf team is highlighted by Youngstown State's Gina Abruzzino, who is a three-time Academic All-Horizon League selection. She is joined by Butler's Abby Seger and Cleveland State's Kristen Obush who earned All-Academic accolades in 2004. Abruzzino also landed a spot on the Horizon All-League team at the 2005 Golf Championships along with Detroit's Mandi Dupuis.
MEN'S TENNIS
Cleveland State placed Eric Winn on the All-Academic team for the second consecutive year along with Wright State's Kevin Teufel. Winn also earned All-Horizon League second-team honors earlier in the spring, while Butler's Andy Bartish appeared on the first team.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Detroit's Andrea Buter is the only returnee from the 2004 women's tennis team. Joining her this year are UIC's Melanie Humphrey and Youngstown State's Karen Najbert, who both claimed spots on the All-Horizon League team last April.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The men's outdoor track and field team includes three two-time selections in Loyola's Sean Conroy and Andrew McQuillan and UW-Milwaukee's Josh Nygren.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The women's outdoor track and field team is highlighted by Butler's Jill Snyder and Detroit's Andrea Karpala who are each making their third consecutive appearance on the list. Ten others return from last year.
