HORIZON LEAGUE TEAM NOTES

BUTLER BULLDOGS (9-32 overall, 5-14 HL)

  • Sophomore Michael Letzter paced Butler with a .529 batting average and .706 slugging percentage last week.

  • Sophomore Grant Fillipitch belted his team-leading fifth homer of the year on Sunday against Youngstown State, helping the Bulldogs to a 4-1 win over the Penguins.

  • Freshman Mike Hernandez has recorded a team-high 44 strikeouts while allowing just 10 walks in 50.1 innings. His 4.4-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio is tops on the team.

  • The Butler offense has drawn a Horizon League-best 156 walks, while the pitching staff owns a League-best 257 strikeouts.

CLEVELAND STATE VIKINGS (14-22 overall, 6-8 HL)

  • Junior Ryan Franks hit .476 (10-for-21) with a double, homer, five runs and five RBI in four games last week. He has hit safely in a career-best five straight games, and leads the team with a .441 batting average.

  • Freshman Alex Johnson has hit five triples this season, tying him for second on the school's single-season chart.

  • CSU's Sunday twinbill at Milwaukee was rained out. The Vikings are scheduled to host the Panthers for three games this weekend at The Pipe Yard.

MILWAUKEE PANTHERS (16-19 overall, 8-4 HL)

  • Milwaukee lost seven of its eight games last week to weather.

  • The Panthers improved to 9-1 at home with a 7-3 win over NAIA foe Cardinal Stritch on Thursday.

  • Junior Tim Patzman whacked his League-leading eighth homer against Cardinal Stritch.

UIC FLAMES (17-19 overall, 11-4 HL)

  • UIC has collected 26 runs on 35 hits in its last two games after registering just 15 runs on 33 base knocks during its previous four contests.

  • Senior Jake Carr hit .500 (7-for-14) with one double and four RBI in three games last week.

  • Junior Chris Rutta is hitting .326 (14-for-43) in 16 games after coming back from leg injuries. The outfielder has also recorded three homers, 18 RBI and a team-leading .605 slugging percentage. His five-RBI performance on Friday against Wright State was his second game with at least five runs driven in this season.

VALPARAISO CRUSADERS (19-19 overall, 7-8 HL)

  • Freshman Steven Scoby enters the week with a nine-game hitting streak.

  • Senior Matt Lenski leads the Horizon League in hitting by 59 points (.427) after going 5-for-12 last week.

  • Sophomore Jarad Miller moved into second place on Valparaiso's single-season saves chart (10) last week.

WRIGHT STATE RAIDERS (21-22 overall, 9-7 HL)

  • Freshman Michael Schum picked up his ninth and 10th saves of the season on Friday against UIC. Schum now ranks sixth on Wright State's single-season list and is tied for sixth on the career saves chart. The right-hander has saved six of WSU's nine League wins this season.

  • Senior Jeff Mercer moved into Wright State's career top 10 for doubles and, in the process, became the fourth WSU player to post back-to-back seasons with 20+ doubles. With at least 13 games left in 2009, Mercer needs only seven more doubles to take the top spot for a single season.

YOUNGSTOWN STATE PENGUINS (11-27 overall, 8-9 HL)

  • Youngstown State split Sunday's doubleheader at Butler and took four of five games from the Bulldogs this season. The Penguins out-hit the Bulldogs .331 to .213 in the five games and outscored them 33-16.

  • For the first time in two years, junior Aaron Swenson suffered a loss against a Horizon League foe other than UIC. Swenson suffered a 4-1 setback to Butler on Sunday in a complete-game effort. He is 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 46.2 Horizon League innings this year.

  • Sophomore Phil Klein did not figure in the decision on Sunday in YSU's 6-5 win at Butler, but the Penguins have won the past four games that he's started.

  • Sophomore John Koehnlein had four hits last week to bring his career total to 220. That moved him into sixth place on YSU's all-time hit list. He needs 14 more to surpass Josh Page (2005-08) and move into fifth.
