HORIZON LEAGUE TEAM NOTES

BUTLER BULLDOGS (1-4 overall, 0-0 HL)

Throughout the spring, Butler will celebrate its 100th season of baseball. To date, the Bulldogs have tallied a 1,145-1,333-11 all-time record, eight conference championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances.

Butler has 11 seniors on its 2009 roster -- the most in the Horizon League this season.

Senior Colin Ziegel picked up the Bulldogs' first home run and grand slam of the season in the opener at Marian College. He belted a bases-loaded bomb in the eighth inning against the Knights.

Butler is scheduled to play three games at professional ballparks this spring. The Bulldogs will square off with Dayton at Victory Field (Indianapolis Indians) on March 31 and Milwaukee at Miller Park (Milwaukee Brewers) in a May 14 doubleheader.

CLEVELAND STATE VIKINGS (1-5 overall, 0-0 HL)

Cleveland State went 0-2 at the Austin Peay Invitational, falling to the host Governors (6-0) and Indiana (9-1). CSU's game with Ball State was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The Vikings collected just seven hits in their two games over the weekend. Junior Ryan Franks was the lone player with multiple base knocks, finishing with one in each game.

Senior Sam Suitca has worked four innings of relief without allowing a run this year. He has given up just three hits and opponents are hitting just .200 against him.

MILWAUKEE PANTHERS (3-4 overall, 0-0 HL)

After starting the season 0-4, Milwaukee went 3-0 to win the Jacksonville Invitational.

Milwaukee posted a 19-11 win over #25 Michigan on Friday -- its first win over a ranked team since March 5, 2006.

Each starter had at least one hit and one run against Michigan. In addition, eight of the nine spots in the order also had at least one run batted in.

UIC FLAMES (0-6 overall, 0-0 HL)

Senior Jake Carr crushed his first homer of the year and collected four RBI in a twinbill on Saturday at Alabama.

The Flames head to Nashville this weekend for a four-game series against Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt.

This is the third straight season that UIC will play Vanderbilt. Last March, the Flames picked up a victory over the #5 Commodores at Hawkins Field when Jake Carr smacked a go-ahead, two-run double with two outs in the ninth.

VALPARAISO CRUSADERS (4-3 overall, 0-0 HL)

Valparaiso began the campaign 4-1 -- its best start since 1969.

Valparaiso's pitching staff allowed just a .238 batting average through its first five games this season.

Valparaiso has already taken two doubleheaders in 2009 (Morehead State and Arkansas-Little Rock) after sweeping just one in all of 2008.

Valparaiso stole eight bases through its first five contests this year after recording just 34 in all of 2008.

Freshman Kyle Muhlsteff drove in four runs on Sunday in the twinbill against UALR.

WRIGHT STATE RAIDERS (1-7 overall, 0-0 HL)

Wright State heads to UNC-Wilmington this weekend with some interesting storylines. WSU men's basketball coach Brad Brownell once led UNCW to the NCAA Tournament, and Raiders assistant baseball coach, Matt Smith, will sit in the opposite dugout of his brother, Kyle Smith, who is a pitcher for Kent State.

Freshman Tristan Moore doubled in his first collegiate at-bat at Tulane and followed that up with a single and run. He also tripled in the series finale against the Green Wave and reached base four times in his opening weekend.

Junior Alex Kaminsky picked up Wright State's first victory of the season by tossing 6.2 innings of relief in the opener at Tulane. Kaminsky fanned three and walked only one en route to his 10th career win.

YOUNGSTOWN STATE PENGUINS (2-3 overall, 0-0 HL)

Youngstown State earned its 1,000th baseball victory on Friday at Virginia Military Institute. In 55 seasons, the all-time record stands at 1,001-958-6. Just under half of those wins (489) came under coach Dom Rosselli from 1948 to 1985. YSU has won 584 games since moving to Division I in 1982.

The Penguins rallied from four runs down in both wins at VMI over the weekend. YSU trailed, 5-1, after five innings on Friday before outscoring the Keydets, 6-1, in the final four frames. The Penguins trailed, 4-0, through five innings on Saturday and outscored VMI, 9-0, the rest of the way. Junior Jacke Healey had the go-ahead RBI in the ninth inning of both games - a two-run homer with two outs on Friday and one-out double on Saturday.
