INDIANAPOLIS -- Loyola University Chicago senior J.R. Blount has been named Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the period of Nov. 10-16. The selection marks Blount's second career weekly honor from the league office.
A native of Milwaukee, Wis., Blount poured in a career-best and Gentile Center-record 42 points on Friday night against Rockhurst University. His total was the most ever by a Rambler in a season opener and Loyola's top scoring effort since Nov. 29, 2001.
Blount made 12-of-22 attempts from the floor and 17-of-20 from the free throw line. He also added four rebounds and three assists in 39 minutes.
Blount, who entered the 2008-09 campaign as a second-team All-Horizon League honoree, led Loyola in both scoring (15.1 pg) and assists (2.1 pg) a year ago. He is the first Rambler since 1990-93 to average at least 10 points in each of his first three collegiate seasons.
Loyola returns to action on Monday at 9:30 p.m. ET. The Ramblers face Southeastern Conference foe Georgia in the first round of the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off in West Lafayette, Ind.
