2005 Men's and Women's All-Tournament Teams
Galena, Ohio -The 2005 Horizon League Men's and Women's Golf Championships came to a close on Tuesday afternoon at the Royal American Golf Course with Butler winning the women's title and Detroit claiming the crown on the men's side.
Medalist honors went to Butler sophomore Lynnsey Showers (76-74-76--226), her second individual title in a row, while Cleveland State freshman Doug Barber won the men's individual title with a three-round total of 216 (71-72-73).
After leading by only one stroke at the end of day one, Detroit (891) pulled away from the rest of the men's field on the final day, as the Titans ended the tournament with a six stroke lead to claim the 2005 championship.
Slots two through four were separated by only three strokes as Wright State placed second (897), UW-Green Bay (898) was third and Cleveland State (899) finished in fourth place.Butler (925), Youngstown State (935) and Loyola (941) finished out the remainder of the men's field.
On the women's side, Butler claimed its first-ever title, as it ran away from the rest of the field with a three-round total of 972, 48 strokes ahead of second place Youngstown State (1020).Loyola (1027), last season's champion, finished in third place, while Cleveland State (1067) and Detroit (1099) rounded out the remainder of the field.
During the post-tournament banquet, the Men's and Women's Golf All-League teams were announced, including Golfer, Newcomer and Coach of the Year awards for both sides.
The Men's All League team was highlighted by 2005 Golfer of the Year, Jason Hill of UW-Green Bay and 2005 Newcomer of the Year, Mark Sommerfeld of Detroit. The two were joined on the squad by Cleveland State's Mike Rutgers and Ben Grandy, Loyola's Keith Nelson and UW-Green Bay's Eric Mabee and Travis Meyer.
UW-Green Bay's Shaun Rezachek was honored as the Horizon League's 2005 Men's Golf Coach of the Year.The Women's All League team was led by Lynnsey Showers, the 2005 Golfer of the Year, and Niki Garden, the 2005 Newcomer of the Year. Both are from Butler. Rounding out the rest of the team were Cleveland State's Kristen Obush, Detroit's Mandi Dupuis, Loyola's Nicole Puch and Marissa Capriola and Youngstown State's Gina Abruzzino.
Butler's Steve Jones was named the Horizon League's 2005 Women's Golf Coach of the Year.
