Cleveland State sweeps Horizon League swimmer and diver of the week honors

INDIANAPOLIS –Cleveland State’s Mark de Swardt and Alice Sommerville are the Horizon League Men’s and Women’s Swimmers of the Week and Josh Gonzalez and Kacey Cummings are the Men’s and Women’s Divers of the Week for Jan. 11-17.

de Swardt, a junior from Durban, South Africa, has earned his second athlete of the week award for the season after going 6-0 last weekend competing against Notre Dame on Friday (Jan. 14)and Xavier and Oakland on Saturday (Jan. 15). He set Horizon League best times for the season in the 1,000 Free (9:18.49) and 200 Individual Medley (1:52.99). He also won the 500 Free (4:32.59) and 200 Fly (1:50.85) in the meet against Xavier and Oakland.

Sommerville, a sophomore from Methven, New Zealand, has earned her second athlete of the week award going undefeated on Saturday against Duquesne, Oakland and Xavier. She took first-place out of 15 participants in the 100 Fly (56.48), 100 Breast (1:05.89) and the 50 Free (23.69). In the 50 Free and 100 Fly, she would have recorded times good for second-place in the League, but already holds the top spot in both events.

Gonzalez, a junior from Brunswick, Ohio, qualified for the NCAA Zone Cuts last weekend with a score of 326.78 in the Three-Meter Dive on Saturday, the second best score in the Horizon League this season. He also took first-place in the One-Meter Dive (289.35). On Friday, in the meet against Notre Dame, he finished fourth of six in the Three-Meter (308.03) and third in the One-Meter (290.35).

Cummings, a junior from Farmington Hills, Mich., was Cleveland State’s top diver in both events on Saturday.She earned a score of 269.63 in the One-Meter, ranking her third in the League this season and took second-place in the Three-Meter (291.83).

Cleveland State will return to action on Jan. 22 for their Senior Day when the men host Wright State in a dual meet and the women host both Wright State and Youngstown State with a 1:00pm (EST) start.
