Cleveland State's Kuelker, Milwaukee's Colarossi Collect #HLTennis Accolades

INDIANAPOLIS –Cleveland State senior Matt Kuelker (St. Louis, Mo.) is the Horizon League men’s tennis Player of the Week, while Milwaukee junior Christina Colarossi (Dearborn Heights, Mich.) is the Horizon League women’s tennis Player of the Week for the week of March 17-23. This will mark Kuelker’s second League honor this year and Colarossi’s first.

Cleveland State men’s tennis team hosted Wright State for a conference dual meet on Sunday. The team won 5-2 over the Raiders to tab their second Horizon League win on the year and bring the squad to a 9-6 overall record.

Kuelker dominated in straight-sets at No. 1 singles against the Raiders’ Lauri Makikalli, winning 6-1, 6-4. The victory notched the senior’s 20th of the season and holds a 13-2 record this spring. He was won 10-straight singles matches and currently ranks fifth with 76 career wins at Cleveland State. At No. 2 doubles play with teammate Nolan Marks, the duo clinched the doubles point by winning 8-6.

The Milwaukee women’s tennis team had a full weekend of competition competing in dual matches against IUPUI, Oakland and Detroit. The team went undefeated with a 6-1 win over the Jaguars, 5-2 victory against Oakland and beat Detroit 4-3 in a close contest. The Panthers hold a 3-0 conference record and are 7-7 overall on the year.

Colarossi went 5-0 on the weekend to lead Milwaukee in its three victories. At No. 3 singles, the junior beat Bobbi Modesto of IUPUI in straight-sets 7-5, 6-4. In Horizon League play versus Oakland, she won at No. 4 singles in straight-sets over Elizabeth Guy 6-3, 6-4. At No. 3 doubles play pairing up with teammate Kristin Kurer, the twosome won against the Grizzlies 9-7 and followed up that performance with an 8-2 victory over Detroit to help clinch the crucial doubles point. In singles play at No. 4 taking on the Titans, Colarossi defeated Julia Fernandes 6-4, 6-3 to tab her third straight-set victory of the weekend.

Cleveland State continues conference matches traveling to Detroit Saturday, March 29 with play beginning at 6:00 p.m. ET. The Milwaukee women’s team hosts Bradley Saturday, March 29 and South Dakota the next day for dual matches.

Top Men’s Tennis Players of the Week:
Charlie Emhardt, Valparaiso (Fr.)—Went 2-0 in singles play at No. 6 and 2-0 in doubles play at No. 2. The freshman has won 11-consecutive singles matches and 11-consecutive doubles matches with teammate Jeffrey Schorsch. He is currently 17-3 on the season.

Top Women’s Tennis Players of the Week:
Karine Celis, Oakland (So.)—Was a four-time winner on the weekend, with two wins at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.
Jana Knoppe, UIC (Sr.)—Collected her eighth-consecutive singles win and straight-set victory against Valparaiso.
Margarita Sadovnikova, Youngstown State (Sr.)—Won her singles match to help secure the League victory over Wright Sate and also won at No. 1 doubles with teammate Marta Burak.
Kara Sherwood, Cleveland State (Sr.)—Picked up a win at No. 3 singles and at No. 3 doubles to mark her fourth-straight singles victory. Is currently three wins shy of becoming the sixth Viking with 70 career singles wins.
Irina Slizovskaya, Detroit (So.)—Won both her singles and doubles matches against Green Bay and Milwaukee while helping the Titans to a 1-1 record on the weekend.
