Cleveland State University sophomore Phil Orno (men's tennis) and Loyola University Chicago senior Kat Krause (softball) have been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (Feb. 12).

Orno was a perfect 3-0 last week as he led the Vikings to a pair of wins against Duquesne on Friday, (Feb. 8) and St. Francis (Pa.) on Saturday (Feb. 9). In CSU's 4-3 win over Duquesne, Orno teamed with Ryan Hamning for a 9-8 (10) victory at No. 1 doubles, before posting a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. The following day, Orno dominated at No. 1 singles again, winning 6-1, 6-2.

Orno carries a 3.4 grade-point average as an English major.Krause hit a pair of home runs in a 12-11 win over UNLV on Friday to add to her Loyola career home run record (28). Krause hit safely in four of five games at the Sportco Spring Kick-Off Classic last week as the Ramblers beat UNLV and Texas Tech, batting .417 with the two homers, a double, four RBIs and four steals.

Academically, Krause boasts a 3.82 grade-point average as a psychology major. She has been honored on the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll, and helped Loyola earn a 2006-07 NFCA All-Academic Team award. She was also honored as ESPN The Magazine's First Team Academic All-District in 2007.

The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.

OTHER MALE NOMINEES:

Aric VanWeelden, Loyola (basketball, sophomore, 3.52, business) grabbed one rebound in five minutes of action against UIC on Saturday (Feb. 9). Loyola is 7-1 this season when VanWeelden scores at least one point.

Dan Brunette, Valparaiso (tennis, senior, 3.62, history and German) earned his first singles victory of the season at the No. 5 position, winning 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 against Eastern Illinois. He also teamed with Kyle Stump for a 9-7 doubles win at the No. 3 slot. Against DePaul, Brunette dropped a tough 6-3, 6-1 singles match and an 8-4 doubles contest with Stump.

OTHER FEMALE NOMINEES:

Kailey Klein, Cleveland State (basketball, sophomore, 3.40, business) guided the Vikings to a 1-1 week by averaging 18.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.0 steal per game while shooting .460 percent from the field. She totaled 18 points in Thursday's (Feb. 7) 68-58 win over Milwaukee, along with six rebounds and six assists. She came back Saturday (Feb. 9) to post 18 points, seven boards, and two assists in a loss to Green Bay. Currently, she is tied for the League scoring lead with 18.9 points per game.

Amanda Body, Valparaiso (indoor track & field, junior, 3.351, political science and English) posted four top-two finishes at the DePauw Invitational, including wins in the triple jump (36' 7 1/2") and the 200-meter dash (26.18 seconds). She also came in second place in the 55-meter dash (7.41 seconds) and the long jump (17'6 3/4"). Body also ran the leadoff leg of the winning 4x400 meter relay team that posted the third-fastest time in program history.
