INDIANAPOLIS -- Cleveland State junior Joe VanMeter (Indianapolis, Ind.) is the Men’s Tennis Player of the Week while Youngstown State sophomore Dominika Lackova (Bratislava, Slovakia) is the Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 13-19.
Cleveland State began its spring season last Friday with a match on the road against IUPUI. The Vikings defeated the Jaguars 6-1 with a doubles sweep and five of the six singles matches ending in victory. The following day, Cleveland State visited Butler and won in a close 4-3 outcome. The Vikings lost the doubles point but were able to clinch four of the singles matches.
VanMeter had an impressive 2015 debut, going undefeated in both his singles and doubles matches. On Friday playing at No.1 singles against IUPUI, the junior defeated Alex Toliver in straight-sets 6-2, 6-0. In doubles play with teammate Nolan Marks, the duo out matched IUPUI’s Jose Calero and David Beasley at No. 3 doubles, 6-1. Versus Butler, VanMeter notched a victory against the Bulldogs’ No. 1 Brandon Woods in straight-sets, 7-5, 6-3.
Youngstown State hit the road to compete in the Nishan Vartabedian Invitational in Pittsburgh at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center. The squad faced student-athletes from West Virginia and Pittsburgh in both singles and doubles play. There was no team scoring during the Invitational.
Lackova led the way for the Penguins while going a perfect 2-0 at No. 2 singles and 1-1 at No. 1 doubles with teammate Marta Burak. Versus Pittsburgh’s Audrey Ann Blakely, the sophomore lost the first set, 6-7, but rallied to win the next two, 6-2, 7-6, to claim the victory. In doubles play with Burak, the pair defeated the Panthers’ Lolade Ogungbesan and Amber Washington, 7-6 (4). Lackova also picked up another singles win at the Invite against West Virginia’s Kaja Mrgole in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Youngstown State continues action on Jan. 23 at Bowling Green in a 6:00 p.m. ET match and then travels to Eastern Michigan the following day for a match at 1:00 p.m. ET. Cleveland State hosts Ball State on Jan. 30 at the Paramount Tennis Club starting at 7:00 p.m. ET.
Top Men’s Tennis Players of the Week:
Nathan Ponton, Detroit (Fr.): Went a perfect 3-0 at No. 4 singles against student-athletes from Western Michigan, Ball State and Toledo with each of his wins in straight-sets.
Carl Hedstrom, UIC (So.): Picked up a win at No. 1 singles against DePaul, 7-5,7-5.
Top Women’s Tennis Players of the Week:
Anna Davydova, Detroit (So.): Part of two doubles wins and one singles win over the weekend against No. 20 Notre Dame and Ball State. Produced a come-from-behind win at No. 4 singles versus Ball State, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, to highlight the weekend.
