CSU Student-Athletes Honored For Academic Success

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A record 152 student-athletes, representing every intercollegiate sport sponsored at Cleveland State University, were recognized for their academic accomplishments at the 19th annual John Konstantinos Athletic Academic Honors Luncheon, which was held on Thursday afternoon (April 16) in the Wolstein Center.
"The Athletic Academic Honors Luncheon celebrates what intercollegiate athletics is all about," CSU Director of Athletics Lee Reed said. "We are quick to recognize the athletic achievements of our student-athletes but may be guilty of taking for granted their academic accomplishments. This luncheon allows us to take a moment to congratulate our student-athletes who are able to successfully maintain a balance between athletics and academics."
The 152 student-athletes were recognized for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or better through the end of the fall, 2008 semester. The women's soccer team led all CSU sports with 18 honorees. Volleyball was second with 15 honorees and was followed by baseball (14), cross country (14), softball (12) and men's soccer and women's swimming with 10 each.
Several additional awards were handed out at the luncheon.
Men's basketball player J'Nathan Bullock (Flint, MI) and women's cross country athlete Audrey Piotrowski (Parma, OH) received the 11th annual John McLendon Award, which is given to the student-athletes who best represents the ideals and personal philosophy of McLendon, a former CSU men's basketball coach who is an enshrinee in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Foremost among those are integrity, honor and leadership accompanied by a demonstrated committment to civility, service to others and the concept of team first, last and foremost.
Women's fencer Courtney Zemkosky (New Middletown, OH) received the President's Award as the graduating senior student-athlete with the highest grade point average. Zemkosky has a 3.84 GPA and will graduate next month with a degree in health science.
Wrestler Marcus Effner (Garfield Heights, OH) received the Faculty Athletic Representative Award, which is presented to the graduating senior student-athlete who has exhibited the most profound improvement academically from freshman year to graduation.
The "Best of the Best" Team Award, which is given to the sport having the highest team grade point average in the department, went to volleyball for the second straight year. The squad had a 3.58 team GPA with 15 of its 16 student-athletes boasting at least a 3.0.
Thirty-three student-athletes received additional recognition for being a member of the Dean's List during every term they have attended at CSU. Volkmar Baur (Men's Swimming), Liz Fazio (Volleyball), Haley Keller (Softball), Alexis Korovich (Volleyball), Melisa Mazanec (Cross Country), Kristina Nagy (Women's Swimming), Jennifer Ramminger (Volleyball), Robert West (Men's Tennis), Steven Wipprecht (Men's Tennis) and Courtney Zemkosky (Women's Fencing) were all honored for being on the list for seven consecutive terms.
Renamed in 2006 to honor former CSU Director of Athletics John Konstantinos, the event has been held every year since 1991. It has burgeoned from a class of 41 honorees that year to over 100 in each of the last eight years.
