The Cleveland State volleyball team was one of 45 Division I schools to garner the Game Plan/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, which was released by the AVCA on Monday (Aug. 8). The Vikings put together a 3.30 GPA for the 2004-05 academic year in addition to advancing to their first Horizon League Championship match.
"This further affirms my belief in our recruiting process," CSU head coach Chuck Voss said. "Not only are we finding success on the court, but our student-athletes are performing at a tremendous level in the classroom as well."
The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors college and high school teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a cumulative 3.30 GPA (or a 4.1 on a 5.0 scale) during the school year. Nominating head coaches must be AVCA members. At the Division I level, 311 schools sponsor women's volleyball.
Cleveland State, which opens preseason practice on Wednesday (Aug. 10), returns nine letterwinners and four starters from last year's team that finished 15-13 overall. The Vikings dropped a heartbreaking five-game decision to Loyola in the Horizon League championship match.
CSU kicks off the regular season on Friday, Aug. 26 as it hosts Toledo at 7:00 p.m. in Woodling Gymnasium. Call (216) 687-4848 for group ticket information. Individual tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for youth.
