INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler’s Tom Curr (Stroud, England) and Nigel Spears (Westfield, Ind.) have been named the Horizon League Track & Field Athletes of the Week for the week of Dec. 5 - 11. This is the first Athlete of the Week Award for both men.
After completing a successful cross country season, Curr is now running mid-distance on the track. Over the weekend at the Hoosier Open, the freshman competed in the 1000-meter run where he took home third place with a time of 2:24.35. The time is a new school record, which was previously held by Olympian Scott Overall in 2006 (2:24.79).
Spears, a sprinter/jumper for the Bulldogs, finished second in the long jump (22-5.25) and fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 40-0.75. The long jump and triple jump marks are a personal best for the sophomore.
Butler will take a month-long hiatus and then head to Champaign, Ill. for the Illini Open on Jan. 14.
