Day One Results
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio— Day one of the 2014 Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Youngstown State at the Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS) is in the books. In total, five Horizon League records fell along with two WATTS records.
The first record broken came in the women’s pentathlon in the high jump. After winning the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.96, Sarah Ann Blount of Wright State registered a high jump of 1.62 meters. The previous League record was 1.57m, set by Raiders teammate Brittany Jones at last year’s championship.
In the very next pentathlon event, Aisha Potts-Tyre of Detroit set a new League and WATTS record in the shot put with a toss of 11.07m, topping Milwaukee’s Shelby Schaal’s 2013 mark of 10.83m. In the final event of the pentathlon, the 800m run, Hana Hunt of Detroit crossed the finish line in 2:23.56 to break the League record she set in 2013, improving her mark by 5.29 seconds. Blount finished first with 3304 points while Jones finished second (3185 points).
Through four events in the men’s heptathlon, Shawn Bohler of Milwaukee leads with 2557 points. Christopher Gozdor of Oakland, who sits in second-place with 2514 points, set a new League mark of 1.97m in the high jump, besting the previous mark of 1.95m set by UIC’s Matt Marzhal at last season’s championship. His jump also tied a WATTS record. The event concludes on Sunday with the 60mH, pole vault and 1000m.
Simbi Laaro, who re-wrote the Milwaukee record book much of the indoor season, made her mark on the Horizon League record book. The senior clocked a 60m dash time of 7.42 in the preliminaries, eclipsing the 2005 record of 7.52 set by Youngstown State’s Danielle Bolt. Laaro’s time was also a WATTS record.
In finals action, Justin Zosso of Valparaiso took first-place in the pole vault with a measurement of 4.60m, while Nicole Waibel of Youngstown State registered a mark of 3.45m to take the women’s pole vault.
Youngstown State took home top honors in both the women’s and men’s long jump. Ciarra Jarrett registered a jump of 5.78m while fellow Penguin William Royal turned in a mark of 7.04m.
In the weight throw, Connor Neu of Youngstown State finished in first with a throw of 20.26m. On the women’s side, Sarah Drozdowski of Valparaiso was crowned champion with a throw of 19.05m, 2.74m ahead of second-place.
Other final winners on Saturday night included 4000m distance medley champions UIC men (10:04.01) and Detroit women (11:51.23). The UIC team consisited of Kyle Hauser, Angelos Karkalis, Gunnar Sterne, and Photis Karkalis while the Detroit team included Sara Taylor, Alani Letang, Shannon Marchant, and Louisa Coppola. Youngstown State’s Eric Rupe and Samantha Hamilton took first-place in the 5000 meter run. Rupe registered a time of 15:04.01 while Hamilton registered a time of 17:08.78.
Sunday include finals in: heptathlon, high jump, triple jump, shot put, mile run, 60m hurdles, 400m, 60m, 800m, 200m, 3,000m and the 4x400m relay. The final day begins at 9:00 a.m. ET with HLN coverage beginning at 12:45 p.m. ET. Live stats are available throughout the event.
