DETROIT, Mich. - University of Detroit Mercy athletic director Keri Gaither announced today that head women's basketball coach Mickey Barrett has resigned from his position, effective immediately.
"Mickey has been a loyal employee of the University for 16 years," Gaither said. "He has mentored hundreds of Titan student-athletes and has always gone above and beyond to help young people achieve success in the classroom and on the court."
Barrett was in his fifth season at the helm of the women's basketball program, amassing a record of 41-84 during his tenure. The team is 1-7 on the 2007-08 campaign.
"My many years of devoted service here at the University have been a great part of my life," Barrett said. "There comes a time when you need to step back and re-assess our paths. This is a tremendous University, with exceptional young women on our team. I may be stepping aside, but I'll never be gone."
Lee Piepho, who has been a Titan assistant coach, will take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2007-08 season, with Tonya Edwards and Cleo Foster serving as his assistants. A national search will be conducted to replace Barrett at season's end.
