INDIANAPOLIS – Detroit sophomore forward Kaitlyn Quarrell (Thunder Bay, Ontario) has been named Horizon League Women’s Soccer Player of the Week, for the week beginning Aug. 22. The honor is the first of Quarrell’s career.
Playing three matches in six days, Quarrell led Detroit (3-1-0) to an undefeated mark, as the Titans knocked off Eastern Michigan, IUPUI and Bowling Green. The sophomore had at least one point in all three matches, finishing the week with seven points (3 goals, 1 assist).
In the 4-0 blanking of Eastern Michigan, Quarrell began her streak with an assist, following up the effort with a two goal performance in Detroit’s 5-1 rout of IUPUI. Wrapping up the week at Bowling Green, the 2010 Second Team All-Horizon League performer scored her third goal in two matches.
Quarrell’s three goals and seven points are both tied for second in the League through the first two weekends of the season. In her freshman season, the Thunder Bay, Ontario-native collected six goals and three assists in 20 matches. Quarrell has now scored seven goals in her last seven matches and eight overall in her last 10 contests.
The Titans head to Detroit neighbor Marygrove for a midweek match on Aug. 31 before flying to Reno, Nev., for the Wolf Pack Invitational over Labor Day. Detroit will take on UNLV at 7 p.m. ET on Sept. 2 before a 2 p.m. ET match against Portland State closes the tournament.
Top Performers for the Week:
- Elise Kotsakis, Butler (Fr., F) - In Butler’s 1-0 victory over Indiana State on Friday, Kotsakis tallied her second goal of the young season, sending a header past the keeper in the 68th minute to lift the Bulldogs.
- Valerie Stahl, Cleveland State (Jr., D) - Stahl played a direct hand in Cleveland State’s first two goals in an eventual 3-2 win at Robert Morris. The defenseman assisted on the first goal of the match and then knotted the contest at 2 just before halftime with her second goal of the year. Despite playing on the back line, Stahl leads the Vikings with five points and is tied for the team lead in goals.
- Maddie Drusch, Green Bay (Sr., GK) - Standing tall all week in the face of two offensive attacks, Drusch held her own as the Phoenix went 0-1-1. In a 0-0 tie against Iowa State, Drusch had a career high 13 saves to preserve the shutout. Traveling to Madison, Wis., on Sunday, Drusch posted 6 saves in a 1-0 defeat at Wisconsin.
- Katie Groesch, Loyola (Sr., GK) - In her first start of the season, the senior turned aside eight shots on goal in helping Loyola to a scoreless tie against Cincinnati. The Bearcats had 17 shots in the match and seven corner kicks, all of which Groesch was able to handle.
- Sarah Hagen, Milwaukee (Sr., F) - The senior earned All-Tournament Team honors at the Milwaukee Cup, turning in three goals as Milwaukee went 2-0 in the tournament. Against #arv Long Beach State, Hagen potted two goals as the Panthers downed LBSU 3-2. In Sunday’s 3-0 blanking of Saint Louis, Hagen picked up her third goal of the tournament, giving her a League-leading five on the year.
- Brooke McCurdy, Wright State (So., GK) - The sophomore made 12 saves over the weekend, leading Wright State to a 1-1 mark. In the Raiders’ 1-0 shutout of Eastern Kentucky, McCurdy had two saves to preserve the win. On Sunday, McCurdy kept No. 7 Ohio State off the board for 55 minutes before two goals sent the Raiders to a 2-1 setback. McCurdy had 10 saves in the defeat.
- Jade Flory, Youngstown State (Fr., F) - Helping lead the Penguins to a 2-0 week, Flory tallied goals in victories over VMI and Robert Morris. In a 3-1 win at VMI, Flory recorded a goal and an assist before sending YSU to a 1-0 overtime triumph against Robert Morris, tallying the game-winning goal just five minutes into overtime.
