INDIANAPOLIS -- Detroit senior midfielder Alyssa Riley (Whitby, Ontario) is the Horizon League Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while her teammate freshman goalkeeper Marina Manzo (Washington Township, Mich.) has been named Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 13-19.
Riley had a hand in all four of UDM’s goals last week, including registering two game-winning goals. She opened the week with the winning goal in the 78th minute of Detroit’s 1-0 win over Madonna. On Saturday, Riley assisted on the Titans’ first two goals of the game before scoring the game-winner in overtime. With 3:39 left in the first overtime, the UDM senior headed a cross into the box past the Phoenix goalkeeper to give Detroit a 3-2 win over Green Bay. Riley has six goals on the year with four registering as game-winners.
Manzo earned her second nod for Defensive Player of the Week after a strong week in goal for the Titans. She recorded her third consecutive shutout and sixth of the season, finishing with two saves in Detroit’s 1-0 win over Madonna. On Saturday, she made a season-high 13 saves against Green Bay as the Titans held off the Phoenix. One of the two goals she allowed in the contest were on a penalty kick. Manzo’s 13 saves were the most since Detroit’s Joanne Hinde turned away 14 shots against Hawaii on Sept. 24, 2009. Manzo faced 22 shots overall on the day as Green Bay out-shot the Titans, 22-9.
Detroit (7-5-1, 4-1) has won three of its home conference victories in overtime this season and return to the pitch on Wednesday as it hosts crosstown rival Oakland at 3 p.m.
