All three higher-seeded teams won their first-round games in the 2005 American Family Insurance Horizon League Men's Basketball Champion Tuesday as the hosts swept their visitors to advance to Milwaukee for this weekend's action.
In the first-round games, fourth-seed Loyola edged ninth-seed Youngstown State 78-75, fifth-seed UIC rolled past eighth-seed Cleveland State 84-65 and sixth-seed Wright State slipped by seventh-seed Butler 61-57.
The action now shifts to the U.S. Cellular Arena in downtown Milwaukee for the quarterfinals and semifinals Friday and Saturday, March 4-5. Third-seed Detroit (12-15, 9-7), which received a first-round bye, will play Wright State (15-14, 8-8) Friday at 5:30 p.m. EST, followed by Loyola (12-16, 8-8) versus defending champion UIC (15-13, 8-8) at 8 p.m. EST.
Awaiting those two winners are regular-season champion and top-seed UW-Milwaukee (22-5, 14-2) and second-seed UW-Green Bay (17-10, 10-6), who earned byes to Saturday's semifinals. Those games will tip-off at 5:30 and 8 p.m. EST and be televised live on FSN.
The championship game will be played Tuesday, March 8, at the higher remaining seed and will be televised live on ESPN at 9:05 p.m. EST. The winner will received the Horizon League's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
