INDIANAPOLIS – It was unveiled Sunday night that the UIC softball team will begin its run in the 2017 NCAA Tournament at the Eugene Regional. The Flames will be joined on the West Coast by Wisconsin and Missouri as they begin play Friday at 10:30 p.m. CT against host No. 3 Oregon at Jane Sanders Stadium.
UIC earned the automatic bid after being crowned as the Horizon League Tournament champions for the ninth time in program history. The top-seeded Flames went undefeated as they took down No. 4 Wright State, 2-0, and No. 2 Youngstown State twice in a pair of 6-3 decisions.
UIC will make its 10th tournament appearance and first since 2011, when the team was eliminated after losses to Louisville and Jacksonville State. The Flames own an all-time record of 12-19 in the tournament as they made a run in the regionals for five-straight seasons from 1998-2002 and had their most storied success with its lone appearance in the College World Series in 1994, when head coach Lynn Curylo was on the team as a freshman.
