NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Schedule
INDIANAPOLIS—Fourteen Horizon League student-athletes qualified for NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Preliminary action May 29-31.
Detroit and Youngstown State took part in the East Regional (Jacksonville, Fla.) while Milwaukee competed in the West Regional (Fayetteville, Ark.). The Penguins led the league with nine preliminary participants.
Youngstown State’s Bobby Grace started things off with a seventh-place showing in the shot put. The senior’s mark of 19.54m qualified him for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Grace is a three-time Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Champion in the shot put.
John Seaver of Youngstown State, who entered preliminaries ranked 45th in the shot put, finished 32nd with a throw of 17.33m
Fellow Penguins Jessica Parham finished 34th in the javelin with a throw of 43.69m while Samantha Hamiliton crossed the finish line in 36:37.04 to finish 40th in the 10,000-meter run.
The trio of Youngstown State’s Connor Neu and Detroit’s Colin Cashner and Eric Lewis competed in the hammer throw.
Neu uncorked a school record toss of 66.19m in his first attempt. His mark was good for fourth-place, securing a spot in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Lewis (60.88) and Cashner (58.72) placed 24th and 33rd, respectively.
Austin McLean and Eric Rupe of Youngstown State competed in the 3000-meter steeplechase. McLean improved upon his personal best time by nearly six seconds, crossing the finish line in a time of 8:51.70. His time placed him 18th while Rupe finished 34th with a time of 9:07.35.
Youngstown State’s Jay Jakovina and Arnaldo Morales competed in the high jump. Jakovina registered a jump of 2.05m while Morales cleared 2.00m. The duo finished 34th and 45th, respectively. Earlier this month, Morales was the high jump champion at the Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Championships and was named Horizon League Outdoor Field Freshman of the Year.
In Fayetteville, Jordan Schmidt of Milwaukee placed second in his 400m hurdles heat. His time of 51.32 topped the previous school record mark of 51.72. In the finals, he ran a time of 52.64. The 41st seed coming into the week, Schmidt finished with the 18th-fastest time.
Dexter Schleis also competed in the 400m hurdles and posted a time of 51.68 which placed him 25th overall.
The Panther’s also had two representatives in the 100m hurdles as Schleis and senior Durell Busby competed in the event. Busby entered the race with the seventh best qualifying time (13.56) and finished with the tenth fastest heat time (13.85) to qualify for the finals.
Schleis was with the leaders the majority of the heat but clipped the final hurdle and did not advance to the finals.
Busby posted a finals time of 13.67 to place eighth. By virtue of his finish, the two-time Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year earned a spot in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships are set for June 11-14 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
