Green Bay comes back for 7-4 victory over Valparaiso in softball championship

PENDLETON, Ind. - The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 7-4 comeback victory over Valparaiso University Thursday in the first game of the Horizon League Softball Championship at Legends Field.

Trailing 4-1, the seventh-seeded Phoenix (19-23) loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh, and Katie Cooney began the comeback with a two-run single to center. Sarah Junion's fielder' choice scored Krissy Hanson to tie the game, and Cooney came home on a passed ball to give Green Bay its first lead.

A throwing error by Valpo second baseman Sara Strickland allowed two insurance runs to score for the final margin.

Valparaiso (24-23), the sixth seed, took a three-run lead into the seventh, thanks to solo home runs by Joylynn Ichiyama in the fourth and Sadie Connor in the sixth.

Amanda Margelofsky (10-7) picked up the win after getting the final two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Cooney, who started the game for Green Bay, re-entered and picked up her third save of the season with a perfect seventh.

Valpo's Stephanie Kelly (8-9) took the loss, giving up six runs - including three earned - in 3 2/3 innings.

Green Bay advances to face top-seed and regular-season champion University of Illinois at Chicago this afternoon at 4 p.m. ET.

Valpo falls to the loser's bracket and will face the loser of today's second game between Butler University and Youngstown State University.
