INDIANAPOLIS - The Horizon League Cross Country Championships will return to Green Bay for the first time since 2000, the League office announced Thursday (Aug. 7).
This year's event will be run November 1 on the Cofrin Memorial Arboretum Trails on the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus. The women's 5,000-meter race will begin at 12 p.m. ET (11 a.m. CT), followed by the men's 8,000 at 1 p.m. ET (12 p.m. CT). There is no admission charge for the event.
"We are definitely very excited and honored to be hosting the League championships in Green Bay this year," said Mike Kline, Green Bay's head cross country coach. "It will be great to have all the Horizon League schools on our campus, and it also will be a thrill for our student-athletes to have a chance to compete at home. I really think that all of the runners will enjoy the course. Our university is truly looking forward to hosting such a prestigious race."
Butler University is the defending League champion on both the men's and women's sides. The Bulldogs have won or shared the last ten men's championships, and the Butler women have captured ten of the last 12 titles, including six in a row.
"As the kickoff championship for the League, cross country sets the tone for the level of competition that we can expect from our remaining 18 championships," said Alfreeda Goff, Senior Associate Commissioner at the Horizon League and director of the event. "We are sure to see outstanding individual and team competition as we crown our first League champions of the season."
The Green Bay cross country program will host the Phoenix Kick-off on Aug. 30 in which a number of Horizon League teams will run to prepare for the League championships.
