INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men's swimmer Travis Mathers and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball player Lauren Felsing have been named U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week ending Nov. 16, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Thursday (Nov. 20).
Mathers (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo) helped lead Green Bay to a Friday-Saturday sweep of St. Cloud State University as he was part of the Phoenix's pool-record time of 7:13.13 in the 800-yard freestyle relay on Saturday. On Friday, he won the 500 freestyle (4:49.38), was runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.41) and helped the 400-yard freestyle relay team to first place.
In the classroom, Mathers carries a 3.71 grade-point average as a human biology major. He has been selected to the UW-Green Bay Dean's List, the Horizon League Honor Roll and the League's All-Academic Team.
Felsing (Hartland, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and the Panthers won both of their matches last week to clinch their sixth consecutive Horizon League regular-season volleyball title, recording 26 digs in victories at the University of Illinois at Chicago Friday and Loyola University Chicago Saturday. She ranks third in the League in digs and has reached double figures in 53 straight matches.
A marketing major, Felsing owns a 3.982 grade-point average and has been named to the UWM Dean's List, the Horizon League Honor Roll and the League's All-Academic Team. Two weeks ago, she was voted to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Team for her performance on the court and in the classroom.
The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
