INDIANAPOLIS –Green Bay senior Hailey Mohrfeld (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) is the Horizon League softball Player of the Week while Wright State Ashley Sharp (West Chester, Ohio) is the Horizon League softball Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 27-May 2.
Green Bay clinched a spot in the Horizon League tournament this past weekend with a 9-11 conference record after going 1-2 in its series against Detroit. The Phoenix took on Iowa State for a mid-week doubleheader and lost both contests 11-3. Against the Titans, the squad lost the first game 9-8 and the second 7-3. Green Bay then bounced back and closed out the series with a 14-2 win.
Mohrfeld extended her hitting streak to 13 games this past week while setting a new Green Bay single-season hits record with 68 on the year. The senior went 13-for-17 at the plate to tab a .765 batting average. Mohrfeld posted a 1.235 slugging percentage and .800 on-base percentage while hitting three doubles, a triple, a home run and garnering three walks over the five contests. In addition, she collected 21 total bases, three steals, and nine RBI for the Phoenix.
Wright State took the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament after winning two of three contests versus Oakland in its weekend series. The squad kicked off the week with a mid-week doubleheader hosting IUPUI as the Raiders split the games with a 7-0 loss and 5-0 win. On Friday, Wright State closed out its conference season with a 4-2 victory over the Golden Grizzlies followed by a 2-1 game one win on Saturday. The team then fell the final game on a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, 4-3.
Sharp let Wright State in the circle with a 2-0 record this past week in appearances against IUPUI and Oakland. The freshman tossed a complete-game four-hit shutout facing the Jaguars in the 5-0 win. Versus Oakland, she allowed just one run and five hits in her seven innings of work while also striking out three batters. For the week, she tabbed a .50 earned-run average, .189 batting-against average and fanned eight hitters.
Green Bay and Wright State are set to participate in the Horizon League Softball Championship beginning on Wednesday, May 6 at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich.
Top Players of the Week:
Jackie Kisman, Oakland (Sr.): Hit .500 while going 6-for-12 with a triple, RBI and run scored against Wright State.
Tiana Mack-Miller, UIC (Fr.): Posted a .667 batting average over the week with six hits in nine at-bats with a double, RBI and seven total bases.
Taylor Nadler, Valparaiso (Fr.): Went 6-for-8 with four walks and six runs in the series against Youngstown State. Also went 1-for-3 facing Bowling Green in the team’s mid-week contest.
Becka Peterson, Wright State (So.): Went 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBI in the second game versus IUPUI, went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI in the Oakland series opener and a two-run home run in the second game.
Cynthia Woodard, Cleveland State (Sr.): Hit .333 with five runs, two home runs, and six RBI in the team’s seven games over the week. The senior hit the game-winning home run in the eighth inning to secure a 3-2 win over UIC in the series finale.
Top Pitchers of the Week:
Elaine Heflin, UIC (So.): Went 1-1 over the week in the circle while tallying a 1.94 ERA in 18.0 innings pitched and fanning 17 batters for UIC. She held batters to a .191 batting-against average and allowed just five earned runs.
Kelsey Waalkes, Oakland (So.): Went 1-0 over the week in 6.1 innings pitched and a 1.11 ERA with three strikeouts.
Taylor Weissenhofer, Valparaiso (Jr.): Struck out eight batters in her five-plus innings of work facing Youngstown State and returned in the second contest to strike out four batters to secure the win for the Crusaders.
