Green Bay's Tenzer, Milwaukee's Kurer Collect #HLTennis Honors

INDIANAPOLIS –Green Bay junior Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) is the Horizon League men’s tennis Player of the Week, while Milwaukee senior Kristin Kurer (Port Washington, Wis.) is the Horizon League women’s tennis Player of the Week for the week of March 31-April 6. This is the first League honor of the year for each student-athlete.

The Green Bay men’s tennis team went undefeated in conference play over the weekend, defeating Valparaiso and UIC. Against the Crusaders, the Phoenix dominated in singles play winning five of the six matches and won two of the three doubles matches to earn the point in the 6-1 victory. The following day versus UIC, Green Bay shutout the Flames 7-0 to move the team to a 2-0 record in the Horizon League and 12-7 overall.

Tenzer led the Phoenix in both dual matches winning each of his four contests. While taking on Valparaiso’s Jeffrey Schorsch at No. 1 singles, he defeated the Crusaders’ single-season wins leader 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. With teammate Howard Scott at No. 1 doubles, the pair was victorious in a close 8-7 (10-8) match against Dave Bacalla and Daniel Oakles. When up against the Flames on Sunday, Tenzer earned another No. 1 singles win over Alexander Raa in straight-sets 7-6, 6-1. At No. 1 doubles with Scott, the duo defeated Carl Hedstrom and Maurizio Feoli 8-2.

Milwaukee defeated conference-foe UIC for the first time since the 1995-96 season to mark the first spring victory over the Flames in program history. In 18 years taking on Horizon League opponents, UIC now holds an impressive record of 120-2.The Panthers’ followed-up their critical Horizon League win with a shutout over Valparaiso on Sunday. The 4-3 victory over the Flames and 7-0 win against the Crusaders moved Milwaukee to 5-0 in the conference and the team has now won seven-straight matches.

Kurer won all four of her matches over the weekend to help the Panthers clinch conference victories. At No. 6 singles against UIC, the senior defeated Veronica Lacerda 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in a thrilling three-hour match to seal the Milwaukee win. In No. 3 doubles play with teammate Christina Colarossi, the pair collected the crucial third doubles match win over Keti Mebuke and Lacerda 8-3 to take the point for the Panthers. Kurer continued her dominance on the court the following day with a straight-set 6-0, 6-0 victory versus Valparaiso’s Morgan Paras at No. 6 singles and an 8-5 win alongside Colarossi at No. 3 doubles over Megan Barthels and Paige Heuer.

Green Bay returns to action this coming weekend to face Horizon League opponents Cleveland State on Saturday and Youngstown State on Sunday. Milwaukee also heads to Ohio to resume conference action to face Youngstown State on Saturday and Cleveland State on Sunday.

Top Men’s Tennis Players of the Week:
Bobby Cawood, Detroit (Sr.)—Moved to 2-1 in the Horizon League with his come-from-behind victory at No. 2 singles. The senior was the sole winner for Detroit against Wright State.
Zeeshan Ismail, Youngstown State (Sr.)—Won his singles match in straight-sets while also winning at No. 3 doubles with teammate Sharvil Nawghare.
Matt Kuelker, Cleveland State (Sr.)—Went 2-0 at No. 1 singles and 2-0 at No. 2 doubles against Butler and Duquesne. He has now won 13-straight singles matches and has not lost a match since February 7.

Top Women’s Tennis Players of the Week:
Valery Kulikovskaya, Detroit (So.)—Posted two wins for Detroit over Wright State at No. 2 singles and No.3 doubles.
Margarita Sadovnikova, Youngstown State (Sr.)—Defeated Cleveland State’s No. 1 singles player in straight-sets 6-2, 6-4. Alongside Marta Burak, won at No. 1 doubles 8-7 (7-4) to pick up her 52nd doubles win. She has also collected 71 career singles wins as a Penguin.
Kara Sherwood, Cleveland State (Sr.)—Went 1-1 in singles and 1-1 in doubles against Youngstown State and Duquesne. She became the sixth Viking all-time with 70 career singles wins.
