Grove, Steuer Named Scholar-Athletes of the Week

Cleveland State University sophomore Steve Grove (men's swimming) and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee junior Beth Steuer (women's soccer) have been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (Nov. 6).
For the second-straight week, Grove has nabbed the Scholar-Athlete of the Week award by helping his team remain undefeated in dual action. Against Saint Bonaventure, Grove placed first in the 50-yard freestyle (21.55), second in the 100-yard freestyle (48.26) and was part of the victorious 400-yard medley relay team. He also swam on the fastest 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:09.82), but that relay was swimming as an exhibition and did not record any points.
In the classroom, Grove maintains a 3.82 grade-point average while majoring in mechanical engineering.
Steuer scored the game-winning goal in Milwaukee's quarterfinal match against Cleveland State, and finished the match with five shots. With the victory, the Panthers will host the remainder of the Horizon League Championship Tournament this weekend in Milwaukee.
Steuer boasts a 3.932 grade-point average as a psychology major. She has been named to UWM's Dean's List, as well as the Horizon League Honor Roll. She was also recognized as a Scholar-Athlete with Distinction at UWM.
The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
OTHER MALE NOMINEES:
A.J. Graves, Butler (basketball, senior, 3.349, math) led Butler to an exhibition game victory over Saint Joseph's with a game-high 19 points, and five assists. He scored 15 points in an exhibition victory against Marian, and was named preseason Mid-Major All-America by Collegeinsider.com.
Tyler Rosenberg, Green Bay (soccer, junior, 3.395, business administration) assisted on the team's goal against nationally-ranked Northwestern on Saturday (Nov. 3). He is currently tied for third on the team in scoring this season, and ranks first on the squad in assists (5).
Tim Puttkammer, Loyola (soccer, junior, 3.48, biology) scored his first career goal in Loyola's 3-0 victory over crosstown rival DePaul last week. DePaul was ranked 18th in the RPI at the time of Loyola's victory.
Robby Leibold, Milwaukee (swimming, junior, 3.845, health sciences) won all three individual events against Wheaton College to help UWM to the team victory. He posted wins in the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard butterfly, and 200-yard individual medley, and has now recorded seven wins and four second-place finishes in 11 races this season.
Ryan Schwarz, Valparaiso (soccer, sophomore, 3.36, business) allowed just one goal in 196 minutes in the net, as he held UIC scoreless until the second overtime of that match. Schwarz also shut out Cleveland State by making two saves for his second shutout of the season. He has not allowed a goal in regulation in his last four League matches.
OTHER FEMALE NOMINEES:
Mel Snyder, Cleveland State (volleyball, senior, 3.81, middle childhood education) helped CSU to a 1-1 split at home over the weekend as she averaged 10.71 assists per game. In Friday's (Nov. 2) victory over Valparaiso, she dished out 45 assists and added five digs, allowing CSU to clinch no worse than second place in the Horizon League regular season standings. She followed that up by handing out 30 assists and adding seven digs in a loss to 17th-ranked Dayton on Sunday (Nov. 4). Snyder continues to lead the League in assists (11.70) and has directed the Vikings to the best hitting percentage in the conference (.219).
Cynthia Morote-Ariza, Loyola (soccer, sophomore, 3.40, clinical psychology) scored two goals in Loyola's 5-0 victory over Green Bay on Saturday (Nov 3), helping Loyola advance to the Horizon League semifinal round. She was also named Horizon League Player of the Year last week, and became Loyola's career record holder for points with 69 in only her second season.
