With four local derbies on Wednesday night, home teams claimed the upper hand, going 3-0-1 as Cleveland State, Milwaukee and Valparaiso notched victories. In the opener of the Metro Series, Detroit and Oakland played to a 1-1 draw.
Cleveland State 2, Youngstown State 1: Cleveland State used a pair of second half goals over a 44-second span to defeat Youngstown State, 2-1, at Krenzler Field. YSU took a 1-0 lead into halftime on a goal from Kyler Lum at the 33:57 mark. It stayed that way until the 74th minute when Vickie Havas netted her team-leading fifth goal of the season, extending her CSU career record to 21 goals. The Vikings took the lead just 44 seconds later when Erin O'Toole sent in a free kick from the right side that Ashley Thiss headed into the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Milwaukee 3, Green Bay 1: Anna Smalley notched two goals to lead host Milwaukee past Green Bay, 3-1, in the Wisconsin derby. Smalley’s first goal of the match put the Panthers up 2-0 as she put home the rebound off a Kelsey Holbert shot that rang off of the crossbar. Her second of the match and fifth of the season sealed the match in the 79th minute, as she ran on to a through ball from Maria Stephans to notch the goal. Read more…(link)
Valparaiso 3, UIC 1: Vanesa Abad broke a 1-1 match in the 75th minute, helping send Valparaiso to a 3-1 victory over visiting UIC at Brown Field. On a free kick from near midfield, Abad pounced on the bouncing ball to notch the eventual game-winner. Jordan Tindell’s first career goal clinched the match at the 87:32 mark. Read more…(link)
Detroit 1, Oakland 1 (2OT): On a cold and windy night, Detroit and Oakland kicked off the 2015-16 Metro Series with a 1-1 tie in double overtime from Oakland Soccer Field. The Titans led 1-0 at the break on a goal from senior Jennifer Borawski as they outshot the hosts 10-1. In the second half, the Golden Grizzlies scored the equalizer on an Alice Palmer tally, outshooting Detroit, 9-3, in the frame. Read more…(link)
