Horizon League Baseball Players of the Week (March 27)

INDIANAPOLIS – UIC sophomore Scott Ota posted three multi-hit games and drove in 10 runs last week and has been named Horizon League Batter of the Week. Danny Sexton of Wright State is this week’s Pitcher of the Week after tossing eight shutout innings and allowing just three hits against Milwaukee.

BATTER OF THE WEEK | Scott Ota | UIC | Sophomore | OF | Foster City, Calif.
Ota led the Flames in batting average (.533), hits (8), home runs (2), RBI (10), sacrifice flies (2) and total bases (15) as he helped UIC to a 3-1 record during the week. The sophomore began the week by belting a three-run home at Northwestern on March 21, helping UIC knock off the Big Ten squad for the second time in as many meetings this spring.

Ota enjoyed arguably the best offensive day of his career in game one of a doubleheader against Valparaiso on March 24. He hit his first career grand slam and tallied a personal-best six RBI (in his first three plate appearances) in a 10-7 victory over the Crusaders. Ota, who leads the Horizon League with 22 RBI, added three hits to match a career high and another RBI in the nightcap Friday.

In the finale of the week, an 8-1 victory over Valpo, Ota notched two more hits, he walked twice and scored a run for the Flames.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK | Danny Sexton | Wright State | Junior | LHP | Pataskala, Ohio
Sexton tossed eight scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out four against Milwaukee to improve to 5-0 for the season. The left-hander was efficient, needed just 82 pitches to get through eight innings.

Sexton boasts a 0.66 ERA for the season to go along with his unbeaten record and has held opponents to a .179 average in his five starts. The junior has allowed just 26 hits in 40.2 innings of work this season.
