INDIANAPOLIS – The Horizon League family mourns the passing of former Butler University men’s basketball student-athlete Andrew Smith, who died on Tuesday.
“Andrew was the epitome of a student-athlete. He embraced competitiveness with a passion for learning and a deep love for his school, teammates, family, and the community,” Horizon League commissioner Jon LeCrone reflected. “His public fight against cancer was truly courageous, and his message of unwavering faith, character and perseverance is an inspiration to all of us. Our thoughts go out to the Butler community and to the Smith family.”
During his time at Butler, Smith helped the Bulldogs reach two Final Fours. Prior to his junior season in 2011-12, the Indianapolis native was voted a member of the preseason all-league team. Following his sophomore and junior years, Smith earned recognition on the Horizon League Honor Roll before receiving Academic All-America honors in 2013, graduating that May.
