INDIANAPOLIS - Milwaukee senior Tyler Bucholz has earned 2010 Horizon League Men's Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year honors, while Wright State sophomore Cassandra Lloyd and Detroit senior Brittany Horne have been named Co-Athletes of the Year on the women's side.
Bucholz, a sprinter from Crystal, Minn., becomes the third Milwaukee student-athlete to win the men's award since it was established in 2003.
Bucholz set Horizon League records in the 400 (46.69) and 200 meters (21.13) at the Horizon League Outdoor Championships in Lisle, Ill., taking first place in both events, and earning Most Outstanding Runner accolades. He also qualified for the quarterfinals of the 400 meters at the NCAA Regional Championships.
Bucholz broke Milwaukee’s school record in the 400 and turned in the second fastest 200-meter time in school history.
Lloyd, a hurdler from Springfield, Ohio, becomes the first Wright State student-athlete to earn the award.
Lloyd set a new Horizon League championship record in the 100-meter hurdles (13.62) en route to an individual conference crown. She also finished fifth in the 100 meters (12.61) and seventh in the 200 meters (25.53) at the League championships.
During the regular season, Lloyd broke the Wright State record in the 100-meter hurdles (13.39), reached the NCAA quarterfinals and finished 18th at the regional in the event, and was named WSU Female Athlete of the Year for the second straight year.
Horne, a thrower from Okemos, Mich., becomes the first Detroit student-athlete to earn the accolade.
Horne notched two individual titles in the discus (44.04 meters) and hammer throw (61.30 meters) setting a conference record in the latter at the league championships. She was also named Most Outstanding Field Performer.
During the regular season, Horne was ranked in the top 10 in the hammer throw in the NCAA East Region, and claimed 14th at the NCAA Preliminary Round Championships. She was also the first Titan to ever win an event at the Penn Relays taking first in the Championship of America hammer throw (56.92 meters).
Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Year are voted on by the conference's eight head coaches and have been named annually since 2003.
