Youngstown State University's men's and women's track and field teams are in first-place following day one competition at the 2008 Horizon League Track and Field Championships at the Youngstown State University track and field facility.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's team and the Valparaiso University men's team are each in second place heading into the final day.

Valparaiso senior Steve Bartholomew and Youngstown State senior Bethany Anderson highlighted the first day of competition as both throwers claimed the League's respective hammer throw titles in record-setting fashion. The two individuals broke the League championship records and qualified for NCAA Regionals in the hammer events.

Bartholomew's toss of 61.52 meters (201 feet 10 inches) surpassed the event standard previously held by Milwaukee's Nick Wichert (194-5, 2007) while Anderson's heave of 55.61m (182-5) catapulted her past former Butler thrower Tara Loper's mark of 182-3(2000). Anderson's first-place finish in the weight throw marks the third-consecutive year she has won the event.

Bartholomew went on to claim the championship in the discus with a mark of 51.06m (167-06). On the women's side, Emilie Maresicek of Valparaiso nabbed the title with a throw of 42.90m (140-09).

In the long jump, Youngstown State junior Shayne York won the men's event and with a leap of 7.03m (6.0) while Milwaukee junior Beth Zimmerman posted a performance of 5.80m (19-00.50) the women's event.

In the distance events, Chris Honig of Valparaiso won the men's steeplechase with a time of 9:29.51 while Loyola junior Jessie Morgenthal took the women's race with a time of 11:22.75. The Ramblers swept the 10,000 meter races as senior Sam Romanoski won the men's event with a time of 31.55.82 before senior Amanda Domich (36.44.15) and teammate Genevieve Binnie (36:53.87) went 1-2 for Loyola in the women's 10K. Domich won the event for the third consecutive year.

Last weekend, in conjunction with the Butler Twilight meet, the Horizon League decathlon and heptathlon events were conducted. UIC's Mike Savegnago claimed the men's decathlon with a score of 6,104 points while Milwaukee's Kory Olson nabbed the women's heptathlon title with a total of 4,457 points.

Action concludes on Friday, with field events beginning at 9:00 a.m. and running events scheduled to start promptly at 2:00 p.m.
