Softball Co-Players of the Week

Detroit junior Katrina Klemp and Loyola senior Allison Scanlin are the Horizon League Softball Co-Players of the Week for the period ending April 11.

 

Klemp hit .500 in 22 at-bats for the 5-2 Titans. She collected 11 hits including five doubles and two home runs and also posted two walks and drove in six runs. Her first round tripper of the week came against Oakland and gave Detroit a 1-0 lead that ended in a 3-1 win. Her second four bagger came two days later against Wayne State in a 7-3 Titan win. Against Youngstown State in a three game series this weekend, Klemp went 5-for-9 (.550) with three doubles, two RBIs and a pair of walks as the Titans won the season series from the Penguins. In total this week Klemp hit .500 (11-for-22), had a 1.000 slugging percentage, a .542 on-base percentage, made 29 putouts, four assists along with two home runs, five doubles, six RBIs and two walks.

 

Scanlin had four hits last week and all went for extra bases as the left-handed slugger belted three home runs and added a double. After going 9 for 10 (.900) last season in a three-game set at Wright State, Scanlin homered in each game versus the Raiders last weekend and drove in five runs. With the five RBI, she moved into a tie for third on the Loyola career list with 75 RBI and needs only 10 more RBI to equal Stephanie Trenerry's school record. Scanlin posted a.737 slugging percentage last week and was flawless in the field, handling 48 chances without an error. For the year, Scanlin is batting .269 with three homers, six doubles and 14 RBI. In Horizon League action, she is hitting .429 (6 for 14) with a 1.071 slugging percentage.

 

 

Softball Pitcher of the Week

 

BRITTANY MCINTYRE

UIC, Junior, Pitcher, Orland Park, Ill.

 

UIC junior Brittany McIntyre is the Horizon League Softball Pitcher of the Week for the period ending April 11.

 

McIntyre enjoyed a strong week in the circle, going 4-1 with a 1.45 ERA in five appearances. She also helped keep the Flames in first place in the Horizon League with a pair of shutouts in UIC's three-game series at UW-Green Bay. After posting wins at Bradley and in the Flames' home contest with Wisconsin, McIntyre saved her best for the Phoenix over the weekend, not allowing a run in 14 innings while striking out six. She is now a perfect 3-0 this season in league games with a 1.57 ERA. Overall, McIntyre now owns a career-high 13 wins this season while sporting a team-low 3.37 ERA.

 

 

Other Top Player Performances - April 11

 

Jenny Jacobs, Butler, Freshman, OF (Indianapolis, Ind.)

Freshman Jenny Jacobs batted .429 last week and had two home runs and seven RBIs in the team's seven contests. Her walk-off shot in Saturday's 5-4 win over Horizon League foe Cleveland State in the bottom of the ninth was her sixth longball of the season, improving the Butler single-season mark, which she has already claimed as her own. Jacobs has hits in six of her last seven trips to the plate after going 3-for-5 in Saturday's second game and getting hits in all three plate appearances Sunday. She leads the Bulldogs with a .345 batting average, six home runs, 18 RBIs and .619 slugging percentage.

 

Whitney Willard, Cleveland State, Freshman, OF (Nova, Ohio)

Willard hit .529 last week (9-17) with two runs, a double and a stolen base. She posted three multi-hit games and extended her hitting streak to 11 contests before seeing it come to an end on Sunday.

 

Cameron Astiazaran, UIC, Senior, OF/DP (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.)

Astiazaran help pace the Flames to a 5-3 record in a difficult stretch last week, batting .591 (13-for-22) with two doubles, four home runs and nine RBI. She also was walked seven times for a .690 on-base percentage and tallied a 1.227 slugging percentage for the week. On Tuesday, Astiazaran enjoyed one of the best days of her career in a doubleheader sweep at Bradley. She tied the UIC single-game hit record with four singles in the opener and then tied the school single-game home run record with two blasts in the nightcap versus the Braves. She finished the twinbill 6-for-7 with a walk and four RBI. The following day Astiazaran went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and RBI as the Flames edged Wisconsin, 5-4. After going 2-for-4 in a doubleheader at DePaul, Astiazaran batted .375 over the weekend with a pair of doubles as the Flames took two-out-of-three in a series at UW-Green Bay. For the season, Astiazaran is now batting a league-high .477 with 23 doubles, a career-high 11 home runs and 36 RBI.

 

Cori Thiermann, UW-Green Bay, Senior, 1B (Cedarburg, Wis.)

Thiermann broke out of a hitting slump with a .500 week at the plate. Playing in four of UW-Green Bay's five games on the week, Thiermann went 5-10 with a home run, a double and two walks. Thiermann's first home run of the season came against UIC April 9, boosting the Phoenix in its 3-2 victory over the Flames. Heading into the week, Thiermann had been hitless in 15 at bats.

 

Brittany Riddle, Wright State, Freshman, Catcher (Tampa, Fla.)

Riddle had two hits and a RBI in the second game at Ohio. She went one-for-two with a RBI in the opener with Loyola. In the second game with Loyola, Riddle went five-for-five with three RBI and two-for-four with a RBI in the finale at Loyola.

 

Tiffany Patteson, Youngstown State, Junior,  SS (Guelph, Ont.)

Patteson batted .333 last week with three doubles and four runs batted in during YSU's 3-4 week. She also posted a slugging percentage of .476 and an on-base percentage of .481 over the last seven games.

 

 

Other Top Pitching Performances - April 11

 

Nikki Naffziger, Butler, Freshman, RHP (Indianapolis, Ind.)

Naffziger posted an impressive 0.78 ERA in four starts last week, allowing just three earned runs in 27 innings of work. Naffziger went 2-2 on the mound with four complete games and a shutout. She combined to allow just three runs in her two hard-luck losses. Naffziger was on the mound for a 1-0 decision Friday afternoon against IUPUI. She allowed just two hits and a walk in the game and fanned eight Jaguars. In Sunday's win over Horizon League foe Cleveland State, Naffziger gave up just one unearned run and struck out five Vikings. For the year, Naffziger is 11-6 with a 1.87 ERA. She's struck out 133 batters in 112.1 innings of work and has pitched complete games in 12 of her 15 starts.

 

Anna Ollgaard, Detroit, Senior, P (Portage, Mich.)

Ollgaard went 3-0 for the Titans this week including a 1-0, three hit win at Youngstown State. Against the Penguins she threw all seven innings, including the final three perfectly. Earlier in the week she threw a complete game win against Wayne State in an 8-2 Titan win. On Tuesday at Oakland, she threw six complete innings, striking out three in walking just one in a 3-1 Detroit win. For the week Ollgaard posted a 1.05 ERA in 20 innings. She notched eight strikeouts while walking just five.  Gave up three runs. Also helped her own cause at the plate by posting a .412 average that included two doubles and two RBIs as she went 7-for-17. Also stole a base and walked twice.

 

Mia Pangere, Loyola, RHP, Senior (Crown Point, Ind.)

Pangere posted her first two victories of the season last week in Horizon League action. The right-hander threw 6.0 shutout innings, striking out four in a 4-2 win over the Raiders on April 9. She then yielded a pair of runs in 5.1 innings in a 6-2 victory on April 10. In Horizon League action, Pangere is 2-2 with a 2.62 ERA.

 

Lisa Meissner, UW-Green Bay, Junior, P (Two Rivers, Wis.)

With a 1-1 week, Meissner helped the Phoenix in its biggest win of the season, as the junior right hander struck out seven in UW-Green Bay's 3-2 win over UIC April 9. Meissner scattered seven hits in the win and walked just two in seven innings of work. For the year, Meissner is 4-4 in nine games and leads the Phoenix with 45 strikeouts.

 

Ashley Lockmiller, Youngstown State, Senior, P (Brander, Ohio)

Lockmiller went 1-1 last week with a 0.43 earned-run average. She tossed 16.1 innings and allowed just one earned run while striking out 16 batters and allowing her opponents a batting average of just .227.

 

 

Horizon League News & Notes

 

Butler Bulldogs (16-16, 5-2 HL)

Freshman Jenny Jacobs has hits in six of her last seven trips to the plate. She leads the team with a .345 batting average...Sunday's game was the 15th one-run game for the Bulldogs, who are now 8-7 in those contests...Butler's 16 wins already match the team's total from last season...JoAnna Gonzalez and Jacobs are each hitting .385 in Horizon League contests, while Melissa Lemrick is just behind with a .381 mark...Butler, as a team, is throwing out 38 percent of attempted base-stealers on the year...The three freshmen in Butler's lineup Sunday - Jenny Jacobs, Amy Hyerczyk and Ashley Barry - combined for seven hits in eight plate appearances.

 

Cleveland State (7-19, 1-2 HL)

Freshmen Whitney Willard and Amber Lowe are pacing Cleveland State at the plate. Willard leads the Vikings with a .378 average while Lowe is hitting .346 and enters this week in the midst of a 13-game hitting streak. Willard saw her 11-game skein come to an end on Sunday...The Vikings are playing seven games for the second consecutive week. CSU had just five home games originally scheduled, but are making up a rained-out doubleheader (from March 26) at IPFW on Monday...Cleveland State is 5-9 in contests decided by two runs or less, including a 2-7 mark in one-run games.

 

Detroit Titans (10-12, 3-2 HL)

Detroit has won five of their last seven games and sits at 3-2 in the league...currently junior Katrina Klemp is on a season long five game hitting streak that has included two homeruns...sophomore Michelle Baggio collected her first two collegiate homeruns this weekend against YSU with a solo blast on Saturday to give Detroit a 1-0 win and a three run shot Sunday to tie the game at 5-5...after seven road games in a row, the Titans return home to Buysse Ballpark for 12 straight home games before heading back out on the road on April 30 and May 1 in Green Bay.

 

UIC Flames (28-19, 5-1 HL)

UIC has won 15 of its last 16 games, batting .339 as a team during the stretch while averaging 9.3 hits and 5.3 runs per contest...The Flames have shown plenty of power at the plate of late, hitting 21 of their 27 home runs this season in the last 16 games...Senior Cameron Astiazaran is closing in on the NCAA single-season doubles record of 29 set by Fresno State's Nina Lindenberg back in 1996. Astiazaran currently has 23 doubles this season with five weeks remaining in the regular season...With its three-game sweep of Youngstown State April 2-3 , UIC had won 16 straight games versus Horizon League foes until UW-Green Bay defeated the Flames this weekend 3-2...Ironically, the last UIC loss to a league opponent came in a 5-3 defeat to the Phoenix on April 17, 2004.

 

Loyola Ramblers (10-20, 3-2 HL)

Loyola went 0-4 against Big Ten foes this weekend as the Ramblers fell twice at Michigan State 0-2 and 1-4 and at Illinois 0-8 and 1-10...Loyola jumped back into the winning column during weekend League action as the Ramblers took two-of-three games from Wright State...Loyola is back in action against Northwestern in a doubleheader on April 12 and then a twin bill at League-foe UW-Green Bay April 14...the Ramblers finish up their week with a three-game series at home against UIC April 16-17.

               

UW-Green Bay Phoenix (8-12, 1-2 HL)

UW-Green Bay matched last year's win total with its 3-2 victory over UIC April 9. The Phoenix was the last team to beat UIC in league play, besting the Flames in Chicago during the 2004 season... The Phoenix will continue league play this week, as UW-Green Bay will host Loyola for a Thursday doubleheader before heading to Youngstown State this weekend for a three-game series with the Penguins...Kristin Kosobucki had a strong showing against UIC in game one of the three-game series, as the senior tallied a season-best 11 strikeouts in the 2-0 setback...For the three-game series with UIC, the Phoenix out-hit the Flames, 19-17.

 

Wright State Raiders (8-11, 1-4 HL)

Wright State went 2-3 last week, including an 11-7 win over Loyola in the second game on Saturday's doubleheader...That win broke a 21-game regular-season losing streak in Horizon League play dating back to a 2-1 second-game win over UW-Green Bay on April 3, 2004...It was also the first regular-season road League win for the Raiders since winning 4-3 at Loyola on April 20, 2003, breaking a 13-game winless streak...WSU continues its road swing this with a doubleheader at Miami on Tuesday following by a three-game set at Cleveland State over the weekend...The Raiders and Vikings have had a history of marathons in the series opener as last year's encounter went 14 innings and the 2003 opener went 18.

 

Youngstown State (14-20, 2-6 HL)

Tiffany Patteson needs to score two more runs to become YSU's all-time runs leader and four more hits to move into fifth-place on the all-time hits list. She has currently scored 93 runs and has 153 total hits. With 41 career doubles, she also needs just seven more doubles to become YSU's all-time doubles leader. She currently ranks third and needs two more to move into second place...YSU is currently 5-12 this season in one-run games.
