2013 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championship Final Results
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Loyola Ramblers men's and women's teams swept the 2013 Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend, garnering head coach Randy Hasenbank Coach of the Year honors.
The Ramblers scored 190 points to take the men's title, followed by Milwaukee (140) and Youngstown State (78). On the women's side, Loyola scored 157.5 points to take the title over Milwaukee (119.5) and Youngstown State (112).
Before this weekend's dual runners-up performances, Milwaukee had won nine straight men's titles and four straight women's championships.
Loyola sophomore Sam Penzenstadler and senior Gina Valgoi were the high-point scorers of the championship meet as each won the mile, 3,000 and 5,000m runs. Penzenstadler and Valgoi had also been the individual champions at last fall's Horizon League Cross Country Championship, leading the Ramblers to a sweep in Kenosha, Wis.
Loyola also swept Indoor Track Newcomers of the Year as Chris Strup and Rebecca Stearns were honored. Ramblers senior Declan Murray was named the Indoor Track Runner of the Year and sophomore James McLachlan was named the Indoor Field Athlete of the Year.
Other individual awards went to YSU's Jay Jakovina and Jennifer Neider (Indoor Field Newcomers of the Year), Penguins junior Ciara Jarrett (Indoor Track Runner of the Year) and Milwaukee senior Samia Taylor (Indoor Field Athlete of the Year).
