Mayo named Men's Basketball Player of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Illinois at Chicago senior Josh Mayo has been named Horizon League Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the period of Dec. 1-7. The selection marks Mayo's fifth career weekly honor from the League office.

A native of Merrillville, Ind., Mayo averaged 26.0 points, 3.0 assists, 1.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals during a two-game stretch last week. The guard made 55 percent (18-for-33) from the field, a sizzling 77 percent (13-for-17) from three-point range and all three of his free throw attempts.

UIC improved to 5-2 on the season by winning one non-conference tilt and one League affair. The Flames defeated Southeastern Conference opponent Vanderbilt on Wednesday (74-55) and crosstown rival Loyola on Saturday (83-69).

Mayo, who paced the conference with 17.1 points per game as a junior last season, was named the Horizon League's 2008-09 Preseason Player of the Year in October.

Mayo, an All-League first-team selection in 2007-08, entered the season 13th on UIC's career scoring charts with 1,207 points. He led all NCAA Division I players in three-point shooting for six straight weeks a year ago and finished the campaign nailing 47 percent (94-for-200) from beyond the arc.

UIC returns to the hardwood on Sunday when it travels to Atlantic Coast Conference foe Georgia Tech for a 2 p.m. ET contest.
