HORIZON LEAGUE NEWS AND NOTES

BULLDOGS COMFORTABLE ON THE ROAD: Butler has surged near the top of the Horizon League standings by going 3-1-2 during a recent six-match road swing. The Bulldogs opened the stretch away from home with a loss at Evansville on Sept. 7, but then has gone unbeaten in the last five contests with wins over Robert Morris, Marshall and Milwaukee.

PATANO AND GARCIA FORM OFFENSIVE DUO: BU senior Frank Patano is tied for ninth in the nation and leads the league with 0.89 goals per match. Bulldog classmate Eduardo Garcia has been a key part of the high scoring, as he has registered a league-best five assists. Garcia's assist total is tied for 21st in the country.

BULLDOGS TOUGH ON DEFENSE: Butler recorded its sixth shutout of the season in a 0-0 tie at Green Bay last Friday. Junior goalkeeper Nick Hegeman, who entered the season as a back-up, has four of those blankings. The six team shutouts match the eighth-highest single season total in Butler men's soccer history. Butler's school-record for shutouts is nine.

FIRST `KLOSS' ON BOTH ENDS: Detroit goalkeeper Bryan Kloss tallied a career-high 11 saves to help the Titans to a 2-1 win at Loyola last Friday night. Kloss also contributed on the offensive end, assisting on freshman Sam Seppo's game-winning goal. It was Kloss' first career point. The victory at LU was Detroit's first over the Ramblers since Oct. 21, 2005.

UIC POLL POSITION: UIC has spent the entire season in the national rankings. The Flames enter this week ranked in the top 15 in all four major college soccer polls. Here is a breakdown of UIC's national rankings this week:

Soccer America: No. 6
Soccer Times: No. 7
College Soccer News: No. 12
NSCAA/adidas: No. 9 (No. 3 in Great Lakes Region)

FLAMING HOT START FOR UIC: UIC is 7-0-2 after nine matches for the second time in three seasons, matching the program's 2006 start as the second best mark in its Division I history. The Flames' best start in school history was 9-0-1 in 1997.

UIC CLAMPING DOWN ON `D': Junior goalkeeper Jovan Bubonja has a goals-against average of 0.14 in his last seven starts, allowing just a late penalty kick goal against Michigan on Sept. 12. He has recorded four shutouts during the 640:24 span. The PK tally against Michigan was Bubonja's only miscue since yielding three goals versus Santa Clara on Sept. 1.

LOYOLA GOES POLLING, TOO: Loyola also represents the Horizon League in the national and regional rankings, appearing at No. 37 (receiving votes) in the College Soccer News poll. Additionally, LU is tied for ninth in the NSCAA/adidas Great Lakes Region poll.

BIG WEEK FOR GEHRIG: Loyola junior Eric Gehrig went on a scoring spree last weekend, starting with his successful PK in Friday night's loss to Detroit. He then helped LU rebound on Sunday, scoring the match's first two goals to propel Loyola to a 5-0 victory over Cleveland State. For the week, Gehrig had six points (3g, 0a) with 10 shots (seven on goal).

CRUSADERS CONSISTENT ON OFFENSE: Valparaiso is the only Horizon League team to score at least one goal in every contest this season. The consistency has helped the Crusaders score 14 goals this season, tying the team's mark from last season.

ZOBECK APPEARS IN NATIONAL RANKING: Valpo freshman goalkeeper Kyle Zobeck is tied for 15th in the nation with 5.40 saves per game. His total is also good for second in the Horizon League. Zobeck has contributed on the offensive end as well, recording an assist against Western Michigan on Sept. 21. It was the first assist by a Crusader goalkeeper since 2001.

STIKL MAKES MARK AT GREEN BAY: Senior goalkeeper Adam Stikl tied the all-time Green Bay career shutout record in a 0-0 draw against Butler last Friday. He now has 15 career clean sheets, matching John Hummel (1972-73) and Josh Lynk (1997-00) for the school record. He also tallied eight saves in the match with the Bulldogs.

PHOENIX FIT TO BE TIED: After playing three seasons with just two ties under the guidance of head coach Tom Poitras, the Phoenix has played to nine draws since the start of the 2007 season.

PANTHERS DON'T FAVOR EXTRA TIME: Milwaukee's 2-2 tie versus Valparaiso last Friday extended an overtime "jinx" for UWM. The Panthers last victory in overtime was Oct. 31, 2004, a 1-0 win over Cleveland State. They are now 0-7-14 in the past 21 games that have gone beyond regulation.

MILWAUKEE POSTS SEASON HIGH VS. VALPO: UWM's total of 21 shots against Valparaiso marked a season high for the team, topping the 20 it recorded against Binghamton on Sept. 12.

UWM'S HIGH SCORING MARKS AGAINST BU: The four goals are the most UWM has given up to the Bulldogs since allowing four in 1992. It is also the first time Milwaukee has allowed more than two goals to BU since a 3-0 loss in 1999. The last time the Panthers allowed four goals in a game was a 4-1 loss to Tulsa in September of 2004. The seven total goals for both teams combined were the most for a UWM game since an 8-0 win over Cleveland State in 2002.

FLEAK LEADING RAIDER OFFENSE: Wright State junior Braden Fleak is among the top goal scorers in the Horizon League. Fleak has four tallies, placing him in a tie for third in the conference. He is also tied for third in goals per game (0.44) and eighth in points per game (0.89).
