HORIZON LEAGUE NEWS AND NOTES
BUTLER SHUTTING OUT THE COMPETITION: Butler's 1-0 win over No. 4 UIC last weekend was the team's seventh shutout of the season, tying the Bulldogs for seventh on the school's single-season shutouts list. Goalkeeper Nick Hegeman owns five of this season's clean sheets, moving him into eighth on Butler's all-time career shutouts list with six.
BULLDOGS VS. THE NATION'S BEST: Butler is now 2-3 against ranked opponents under head coach Kelly Findley. The Bulldogs had dropped their last three matches against nationally-ranked teams, prior to the last Saturday's win over No. 4 UIC.
CSU'S STOJKOVIC BACK AT FULL STRENGTH: Cleveland State senior Nenad Stojkovic, who is returning from an ACL tear that sidelined him in 2007, is second on the team with three goals this season. Stojkovic scored two goals last weekend, helping the Vikings to a pair of wins.
CLEVELAND STATE CONNECTS FOUR: CSU has now won four straight matches, beating Green Bay, Milwaukee, IPFW and Valparaiso during the past two weekends. The Vikings' last four-match win streak came in September 2003.
GRAF STARTING IN NET FOR DETROIT: Detroit freshman goalkeeper Paul Graf made his second career start against Wright State last weekend. He was relieved in the 67th minute by senior Luke Paneccasio. WSU won the match, 2-0.
UIC POLL POSITION: No. 12 UIC has spent the entire season in the national rankings. The Flames enter this week ranked in the top 20 in all five major college soccer polls. Here is a breakdown of UIC's national rankings this week:
Soccer America: No. 12
Soccer Times: No. 12
NSCAA/adidas: No. 14 (No. 6 in Great Lakes Region)
Top Drawer Soccer: No. 19 (Tournament 48 poll)
College Soccer News: No. 17
UIC'S STREAK SNAPPED: UIC's 1-0 loss at Butler last Saturday snapped the Flames' 12-match unbeaten streak. It was the team's second loss in its last 22 matches, and just the second Horizon League setback in its last 10 contests.
UIC CLAMPING DOWN ON `D': Junior goalkeeper Jovan Bubonja has allowed just three goals in UIC's last 11 matches. The Serbia native posted his sixth shutout of the season in a 0-0 tie against No. 17 Ohio State last Wednesday. Bubonja's 0.584 goals-against average currently ranks 15th in the nation.
LOYOLA'S BEST START: Loyola's current 8-2-1 record ties the Ramblers for the best 11-match start in school history. LU's 1982 squad - the second varsity team in school history - also started 8-2-1.
BYRNE LEADS RAMBLER DEFENSE: Loyola senior goalkeeper Brian Byrne has posted shutouts in LU's last four matches, pulling his career total 16. He is now second on the Ramblers' all-time shutouts list, and needs four to tie the school record. Loyola has outscored its last four opponents, 11-0, since dropping a 2-1 match to Detroit on Sept. 26.
CRUSADERS DROPPING CLOSE LEAGUE MATCHES: Valparaiso may be 0-4-1 in Horizon League play, but three of the Crusaders' four conference losses have come by just one goal. Valpo hasn't lost any match this season by more than two goals.
ZOBECK APPEARS IN NATIONAL RANKING: Valpo freshman goalkeeper Kyle Zobeck is tied for 24th in the nation with 5.00 saves per game. His total is also good for second in the Horizon League with CSU's Nick Harpel. Only UWM's Grant Fernstrum (5.42) averages more saves than Zobeck and Harpel. The Crusader goalkeeper has also contributed on the offensive end, recording an assist against Western Michigan on Sept. 21. It was the first assist by a Crusader goalkeeper since 2001.
GREEN BAY TAKES BACK THE CUP: The Chancellor's Cup, which is awarded to the winner of the Green Bay-Milwaukee match, is back in Green Bay after the Phoenix recorded a 2-0 win at Milwaukee last Saturday night. Milwaukee had won the previous two contests. The victory was Green Bay's first at UWM's Engelmann Field since 1998.
RICKETTS POSTS LEAGUE'S FIRST HAT TRICK: Green Bay senior Tosaint Ricketts recorded the Horizon League's first hat trick this season on Oct. 5 in his seven-point effort against Detroit. Ricketts had a goal and an assist in the first half of the contest before scoring twice more - including the game-winner in the 77th minute - in the second half. The Edmonton, Alberta, native is tied for fourth in the Horizon League with six goals.
PROCHAZKA LENDS A HAND: Green Bay sophomore David Prochazka leads the Horizon League and ranks seventh in the country with 0.67 assists per game. He has six assists in nine matches this season.
MILWAUKEE FRESHMEN LEAD THE WAY: Nine of Milwaukee's 13 goals have been scored by freshmen. Eric Frazier leads the newcomers with four goals, followed by Evan Bartzis (3) and Ross Van Osdol (2).
FLEAK ATTAINS TOP 10 STANDING: Wright State junior Braden Fleak scored both of the Raiders' goals in a 2-0 win against Detroit last weekend, marking his fourth career multi-goal performance and his first since 2006. Fleak now has 32 career tallies, placing him 10th place on Wright State's all-time list.
