HORIZON LEAGUE SEMIFINALS - NOV. 12
No. 2 Butler vs. No. 3 Detroit - Noon EST
Engelmann Field, Milwaukee, Wis.
Butler and Detroit enter Friday's contest with the two-best overall records in the Horizon League this season. The Titans currently hold the best mark with a 13-5 record, while the Bulldogs have accumulated a 13-5-1 record in 2004. Both squads met in an early season battle on Sept. 24, with Butler knocking off visiting Detroit, 2-1, at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis. Both teams have previously met five times during the league tournament, with Butler holding a 3-2 edge. In last season's tournament semifinals, the Bulldogs eked out a 3-2 triumph in overtime over the Titans. Current Bulldog Scott Olsen took a pass from Cory Edgington and caromed a seven-yard shot off the post for the game-winner at the 94:37 mark to propel Butler into the championship match against UW-Milwaukee. This season, Olsen is once again leading the Bulldogs as he heads the team in goals (9), assists (8) and points (26). In his fourth and final season, Detroit's Ablaye Camara has made his mark on the Horizon League. Camara is currently tied for tenth all-time in the Horizon League in career goals with 35 and stands alone at tenth on the list with 96 career points. He has accumulated 221 shots in his four years, placing him sixth on the all-time league list. This season, Camara has tallied 10 goals and five assists for 25 points. Also highlighting this matchup are the players between the posts. Butler goalkeeper Evan Reinhardt is second in the Horizon League in goals against average (1.06) and save percentage (.704) and has made 54 saves this season along with three shutouts. Detroit displays one the best up-and-coming goalkeepers in the league in true freshman Sasha Boskovic. Boskovic has made 72 saves this season (4.00 spg) and leads the league with five shutouts. Butler and Detroit are set for a Noon EST start on Friday at Engelmann Field in Milwaukee, Wis.
No. 1 UW-Milwaukee vs. No. 4 Wright State - 2:30 p.m. EST
Engelmann Field, Milwaukee, Wis.
UW-Milwaukee enters Friday's semifinal match with Wright State riding a seven-game tournament win streak. The Panthers have won back-to-back Horizon League Championships and are looking to capture the first three-peat since Evansville conquered the feat four-straight times from 1989-92. The Panthers and Raiders have met three previous times in the league tournament, with Milwaukee holding a 2-1 advantage. Most recently, Milwaukee shutout Wright State, 3-0, in last season's semifinal round. Former Panther Bobby Lish netted one first half and second half goal to lead Milwaukee into the championship against Butler. Earlier this season, 2004 Horizon League Player of the Year Antou Jallow, netted three unanswered goals to give the Panthers a 3-1 victory over the visiting Raiders at Engelmann Field in Milwaukee on Oct. 15. Last week in the first-round triumph over Cleveland State, Jallow recorded his 55th career goal, placing him atop the Horizon League on the career goals list previously held by Detroit's Jorge Ferreira (1995-98). He currently leads the Panthers with 13 goals, while chipping in four assists for a league-best total of 30 points on the season. Wright State is paced by Ricky Strong, who leads the Raiders with 12 goals and one assist for 25 points this year. Strong is currently eighth all-time in the Horizon League with 98 career points and seventh all-time with 217 shots. UW-Milwaukee netminder Eric Mickschl leads the Horizon League in goals against average (0.68) and save percentage (.800) after allowing only eight goals and making 32 saves in 1061:01 minutes of work. Jason Balach will be between the posts for the Raiders as he has accumulated 77 saves this season for a .726 save percentage.
