GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee captured both Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday at DePauw University. The men's title was UWM's sixth straight, while the women's crown was its third in the past four years.
Milwaukee (147 points) sailed past six League opponents on the men's side -- Youngstown State University (98), Butler University (97), the University of Detroit Mercy (79), the University of Illinois at Chicago (59), Loyola University Chicago (39) and Valparaiso University (7).
The Panthers (165 points) then rolled past seven conference foes on the women's side -- Youngstown State (120), Loyola (82), Valparaiso (44), UIC (41), Detroit (29), Wright State (28) and Butler (18).
Nine Horizon League Indoor Championship records were shattered during the two-day event.
Butler senior Andy Baker, senior Tyler Kos, junior Joe MacDonald and junior Steve Lisgo set a new standard in the distance medley relay (9:53.82), while MacDonald (3,000 meter, 8:17.62), Youngstown State sophomore Jerrill Hall (60-meter hurdles, 8.22) and UIC senior Mike Savegnago (pole vault, 4.90 meters) also broke men's records.
Valparaiso senior Laura Rolf posted a new measuring stick in both the 3,000 meter (9:44.72) and 5,000 meter (16:53.16), while Wright State freshman Cassandra Lloyd (60-meter hurdles, 8.63), Milwaukee junior Kelsey Conrad (200 meter, 24.70) and Loyola freshman Devin Gosberry (400 meter, 56.63) also broke women's records.
Lisgo was named Most Outstanding Running Performer on the men's side, while Savegnago earned Most Outstanding Field Performer accolades.
Youngstown State freshman Kiplangat Tisia was named Men's Running Newcomer of the Year, while Milwaukee freshman Jake Whitewater picked up Field Newcomer of the Year honors.
Rolf was named Most Outstanding Running Performer on the women's side, while Youngstown State junior Alisha Anthony (long jump champion, 5.70 meters) earned Most Outstanding Field Performer accolades.
Gosberry was named Women's Running Newcomer of the Year, while UIC freshman Kellie Schuh earned Most Outstanding Field Performer laurels.
Savegnago, who also won the heptathlon (4,939 points), was the only two-event men's winner. Loyola senior Pam Staton (800 meter, 2:18.75 / mile, 5:02.79) and Milwaukee junior Kelsey Conrad (60 meter, 7.69 / 200 meter, 24.70) joined Rolf as the only two-event women's champions.
Pete Corfeld, now in his 20th season leading both Milwaukee track programs, was named Men's and Women's Coach of the Year for the 2009 indoor season.
