INDIANAPOLIS -- Both men's soccer matches went to overtime on Saturday night, with Milwaukee getting a golden goal to beat UIC and Valparaiso drawing with Green Bay.
Milwaukee 2, UIC 1 (OT)
In a tense affair at Engelmann Stadium, Milwaukee got the game-winning goal less than a minute into overtime to beat UIC, 2-1.
Milwaukee (5-4-2, 1-0-2 Horizon) grabbed its first win in Horizon League play while picking up a potentially key tiebreaker over UIC (4-5-2, 1-1-1 Horizon).
The Panthers were able to take a 1-0 lead into halftime after Zach Stevenson notched his first goal of the year in the 35th minute. James Ashcroft sent a ball into the box from 45 yards out, resulting in Stevenson’s header to beat Goran Ikic.
However, UIC came out aggressive in the second half, resulting in Ivan Stanisavljevic’s fifth goal of the season. Off a scramble on the edge of the 18-yard box, Stanisavljevic’s shot got past John Shakon to know the match in the 57th minute.
After a UIC foul 30 seconds into overtime, Milwaukee capitalized, with Laurie Bell’s free kick finding the head of Jamie Bladen, who ended the match with the goal.
Ikic finished with five saves for UIC, while Shakon turned in six for the Panthers.
Green Bay 1, Valparaiso 1 (2OT)
Green Bay and Valparaiso traded second half goals before two scoreless overtime sessions sent the teams to a 1-1 draw at Brown Field.
Valparaiso (1-6-3, 0-1-2 Horizon) received five saves from Kyle Zobeck to preserve the tie, while Green Bay (2-7-3, 0-2-2 Horizon) used nine Ryan Wehking saves to hold off the Crusaders.
Green Bay jumped out front in the 59th minute, when Alonso Flores fed Jordan Dover with a cross. Dover came back to the far post to give the Phoenix the first strike of the match.
Twenty minutes later, Jaymie Bullard tallied the equalizing goal. Stipo Zeba passed to Bullard, who went along the ground inside the left post from 25 yards out.
In overtime, Zobeck made two saves and Wehking four.
