MILWAUKEE -- Panthers freshman catcher Mitch Ghelfi was chosen as a member of the 2013 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team.
The squad, selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper, was announced Wednesday. Ghelfi, one of three catchers on the team, was the only Horizon League player to be honored. He was also named the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year.
After redshirting the 2012 campaign, Ghelfi quickly worked his way into Milwaukee's starting lineup, batting .322 in 38 games. He hit three home runs to go with 19 RBI and made just one error in the field, throwing out close to 40 percent of would-be base stealers. The freshman batted a team-best .413 in 16 Horizon League contests.
Ghelfi became just the second-ever Milwaukee freshman to record five hits in a game March 23, posting a 5-for-5 day that included a pair of doubles and a home run against UIC.
