Milwaukee's Hetebrueg, Valparaiso's Sajevic Named Scholar-Athletes of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee junior Andy Hetebrueg (baseball) and Valparaiso University junior Kim Sajevic (women's tennis) have been named the U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Tuesday (March 18).

Hetebrueg helped Milwaukee to a 2-1 week after the team started the season 1-10. He went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in during his first start in the field on Saturday (Mar. 15). Despite earning a loss on the mound on Sunday (Mar. 16), Hetebrueg allowed just three earned runs in six innings, while striking out three.

Academically, Hetebrueg boasts a 3.787 grade-point average as a marketing major. He has been on the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll, as well as the League All-Academic Team, while also being named to the Dean's Honor List at UWM. Hetebrueg was also honored on ESPN The Magazine's Academic All-District Team last season.

Sajevic posted a 2-1 record at the No. 1 singles position with victories against Adelphi and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville last week. She is now 4-2 in singles this spring. Sajevic also teamed with Julie Wingstrom to notch two victories at the second doubles position.

As an electrical engineering major, Sajevic maintains a 3.85 grade-point average. She was previously named to the Mid-Continent Conference's All-Academic Team, as well as the Mid-Con Comissioner's List of Academic Excellence. She has been a member of the Dean's List every semester, and was also named to the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll last fall.

The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours, and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.

OTHER MALE NOMINEES:

Alex Lau, Valparaiso (tennis, junior, 3.32, electrical engineering) led Valpo to a 2-1 record on the week, playing at both second singles and second doubles. He won all three singles contests, defeating opponents from Connecticut, Adelphi, and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. Lau also teamed with Tom Litscher to win both doubles matches he played.

OTHER FEMALE NOMINEES:

Elyse VanBogaert, Loyola (basketball, sophomore, 3.65, undeclared) averaged 16 points and eight rebounds in a pair of Horizon League Championship games last week. She helped Loyola to its first League tournament victory since 2006, with a 73-69 overtime win at UIC on Monday (Mar. 10), racking up 16 points and nine rebounds. VanBogaert followed that up with a 16-point, seven-rebound effort in an 83-67 loss at Green Bay on Wednesday (Mar. 12).
