INDIANAPOLIS -- Milwaukee teammates Paul Hoenecke and Eric Semmelhack have been named Horizon League Baseball Players of the Week for the period of May 7-13.
Hoenecke picked up Batter of the Week accolades after batting .588 in Milwaukee’s 4-0 week. He started the week with a 2-for-2 performance, including a home run, in UWM’s 6-4 win over Northwestern. The senior scored three runs and had three RBIs in the contest that was played at Miller Park, the home of MLB’s Milwaukee Brewers.
In the Panthers sweep of Butler over the weekend, Hoenecke was 8-of-15 in helping the Panthers clinch the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Horizon League tournament. He was 3-for-5 with three RBIs in UWM’s win on Saturday and he was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored in Milwaukee’s come-from-behind win on Sunday.
Hoenecke finished the week with 10 hits in 17 at-bats. The senior first baseman/catcher had four doubles and one home run. He scored nine runs and drove in eight more for a UWM offense that scored 40 runs in its four games last week.
Semmelhack picked up Pitcher of the Week honors after pitching seven shutout innings Friday night against Butler. He allowed just three hits while holding the Bulldog batters to a .130 hitting average. He struck out eight and walked just two batters. In his seven innings of work, he allowed only one Butler played to reach second base and that came in the sixth inning with two outs.
Other Horizon League top performers (May 7-13)
Corey Davis, Wright State, Sr., C/OF - Davis batted .412 at the plate last week for the Raiders who went 4-0. He scored five runs and drove in five more. He was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and two RBIs in WSU’s 5-3 win over Youngstown State on Sunday.
Will Hagel, Valparaiso, Sr., IF/OF - Hagel had hits in all five games last week and is currently on a nine-game hitting streak. He batted .421 on the week with six runs scored and eight RBIs.
Drew Dosch, Youngstown State, So., 3B - Dosch batted .364 and had at least one hit in all of YSU’s games last week. He recorded three doubles and had three RBIs.
Brian Evak, UIC, Fr., RHP - Evak picked up the win over Valparaiso on Saturday, pitching his first collegiate complete game. He allowed three earned runs on nine hits, while striking out two Crusaders.
Jordan Marker, Wright State, Sr., LHP - Marker picked up a win and a save for the Raiders in their weekend series sweep of Youngstown State. He picked up the win on Saturday, pitching four innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts. He earned the save on Sunday, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
Kyle Wormington, Valparaiso, Jr., RHP - Wormington pitched 7.2 innings to earn the win in Valparaiso’s series-clinching win over UIC. He allowed just six hits (all singles) and one walk, while striking out seven.
Kevin McCulloh, Youngstown State, Jr., RHP - McCulloh made two appearances for the Penguins last week. He finished the week with 4.2 innings pitched, allowing one earned run.
