INDIANAPOLIS -- Milwaukee senior Paul Hoenecke and junior Cale Tassi, along with Valparaiso senior Kevin Wild have been named Horizon League Baseball Players of the Week for the period of April 16-22.

Hoenecke picked up Batter of the Week accolades after batting .500 in Milwaukee’s four games last week. The Panthers finished the week 3-1, including a sweep of Youngstown State on the weekend to improve to 10-8 in conference play. Hoenecke had at least one hit in each game last week and had back-to-back three hit games against YSU. He drove in two runs in Milwaukee’s 3-2 win over the Penguins on Saturday in the first game of the team’s doubleheader and had a first-inning home run in the second game of the day to help propel the Panthers to an 8-1 win.

Hoenecke finished the week with a .750 slugging percentage and a .556 on-base percentage. He scored four runs and drove in four more.

Tassi and Wild shared pitching honors after both players pitched gems last week. Tassi struck out a career-high 10 batters as he went 7.0 innings in Milwaukee’s 8-1 win over Youngstown State. He walked just one batter and allowed six hits and one unearned run. He lowered his league-leading ERA to 2.55 and has now struck out 49 batters this season, second-most in the Horizon League.

Wild threw a complete game shutout to lead Valparaiso to a 1-0 win over Butler on Sunday. It was Wild’s first collegiate shutout and second complete game of his career. He allowed four hits, none after the fifth inning, and struck out five, while walking just three batters. Wild ranks second, right behind Tassi, with a 2.57 ERA and also ranks second in the conference in opponents’ batting average (.227) and innings pitched (70.0).

Other Horizon League top performers (April 16-22)
Ryan Ashe, Wright State, Sr., OF -
Ashe batted .529 for WSU last week. He was 4-for-4 in the series-opener against UIC and finished the week with three multi-hit games.

Steven Scoby, Valparaiso, Sr., OF - Scoby hit .353 last week in helping Valparaiso to a sweep of Butler. He singled home the only run of the game in Valpo’s 1-0 win over the Bulldogs. He had three multi-hit games on the week.

Drew Dosch, Youngstown State, So., 3B - Dosch batted .438 and hit safely in all four games for YSU last week. He hit his 5th home run of the season and also had a double in their first game of the series against Milwaukee.
Michael Schum, Wright State, Sr., RHP - Schum earned three saves last week, closing WSU’s win at Toledo and both of its victories at UIC. He is now has 34 career saves tied for the most in WSU history.

Russ Harless, Youngstown State, Fr., RHP - Harless allowed just one earned run on five hits in 10 innings of work last week. Against Milwaukee, he did not allow a hit after the second inning and surrendered just one earned run in eight innings.

Brad Schnitzer, Butler, Sr., LHP –Schnitzer threw a complete game in Butler’s 1-0 loss at Valparaiso on Saturday. He allowed just one earned run on five hits over 8.0 innings.
