AUSTIN, Texas– Milwaukee senior outfielder Sam Koenig (Prairie du Sac, Wis.) was named the 2015 Capital One Academic All-American of the Year for Division I Baseball, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

As an education major at Milwaukee, Koenig held a 3.86 grade-point average and is the third student-athlete in Horizon League history to be named an Academic All-American of the Year, joining Andy Matko (Wright State, baseball, 1997) and Matt Howard (Butler, men’s basketball, 2011).

Koenig was named to the Louisville Slugger All-American Third Team, becoming just the third Panther in program history to garner All-American honors in baseball, joining Mike Goetz in 2006 and Mike Porcaro in 2013.

The senior had an impressive 2015 campaign as he garnered First-Team All-Horizon League accolades and led Milwaukee to a 39-20 overall record and spot in the League’s championship finals.

Koenig posted a .361 batting average with 57 runs batted in, 58 runs scored and totaled 83 hits on the season. Of those 83 hits, 36 went for extra bases, including 15 homes runs that marked the second-most in program history.

The senior led the Horizon League in runs scored, hits, home runs and total bases while being second in doubles, runs batted in and slugging percentage. Koenig’s 151 total bases finished second all-time in Milwaukee history, just missing the program mark of 155.
