INDIANAPOLIS -- Youngstown State sophomore Silviu Mistreanu (Iasi, Romania) and Milwaukee junior Kristin Kurer (Pt. Washington, Wis.) have been named the Horizon League Tennis Players of the Week.
It is the second honor of the season for Mistreanu and the first for Kurer.
Mistreanu led the Penguins to a 6-1 win over Dayton, winning 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 at No. 1 singles over the Flyers' Aidan Koross, who had already picked up No. 1 singles wins over Butler and Detroit this season. The victory extended Mistreanu's winning streak to four matches, all at No. 1 singles.
The sophomore also teamed with Felipe Rosa to win 8-2 at No. 3 doubles, extending Youngstown State's winning streak to four matches, the school's longest since October 2009.
Mistreanu and the Penguins return to action on Friday night, facing St. Bonaventure in Boardman, Ohio. YSU will also travel to New Orleans, La., this weekend to face Tulane on Sunday afternoon.
Kurer helped Milwaukee beat Western Illinois and Green Bay this week, picking up a pair of convincing singles wins without dropping a game. Against WIU, Kurer beat Kristen Havelka 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and against Green Bay she defeated the Phoenix's Eleanor O'Brien 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
With the two wins, the junior improved to 18-6 overall this season in singles action. Her 59 career singles wins rank second in school history.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday against Whitewater.
