INDIANAPOLIS—Oakland’s Amr el Sayed (Alexandria, Egypt) and Milwaukee’s Emily McClellan (Delavan, Wis.) have been named Horizon League Men’s and Women’s Swimmers of the Week while Milwaukee’s K.J. Heger (Rockford, Ill.) and Oakland’s Tricia Grant (West Bloomfield, Mich.) have been named Horizon League Men’s and Women’s Divers of the Week for the week of Dec. 3-9.
el Sayed led Oakland at the Eastern Michigan Invitational in both his individual and relay events. He swept the three longest freestyle swims with victories in the 1650-freestyle in a time of 15:38.38, 200-freestyle with a time of 1:38.77 and 500-freestyle in a time of 4:26.34. el Sayed finished all three swims with the fastest times in the Horizon League this season. He was also a member of the winning 200-medley relay team and 800-freestyle relay that set a meet and pool record with a 6:37.62 finish.
McClellan had a record-breaking weekend at the Iowa Hawkeye Invite breaking both Milwaukee and Horizon League records in her three individual events. She swam NCAA A-cut times in both breaststroke events with the third-fastest time in the nation in the 100-breastroke with a time of 58.76 and the fourth-fastest time in the nation in the 200-breastroke in a time of 2:06.78. McClellan finished second in the 200-individual medley in a time of 1:57.14 and helped post the fastest times in the Horizon League this year as a member of the 400-medley relay, 200-freestyle relay, 400-freestyle relay, and 800-freestyle relay teams.
Heger earned his fourth Horizon League honor this year with his performance at the Iowa Hawkeye Invite in three diving events. He placed second on the platform with a score of 315.75, breaking the Milwaukee school record that had stood since 2005. He posted a 1-meter score of 323.30 to place third overall and scored a 278.75 on the 3-meter board.
Grant captured her 11th win of the season to lead Oakland to a first place finish at the Eastern Michigan Invitational. She earned her fifth Horizon League honor this year with her performances on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. She placed first in the 1-meter with a score of 267.35 and second in the 3-meter posting a score of 279.65.
Oakland takes a break from competition before returning to the pool for the CSCAA Ed Kennedy Memorial Swim Meet Dec. 31 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Milwaukee is finished with competition for the remainder of the year and will continue in mid-January.
