INDIANAPOLIS -- Youngstown State forward Heidi Schlegel (Wapakoneta, Ohio) has been named the Horizon League Women’s Basketball Player of the Week and Detroit forward Megan Galloway (Greenville, Ohio) has been named Freshman of the Week.
Schlegel averaged a team-best 24.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game last week for the Penguins as YSU won two road games to force a three-way tie for first place in the League standings. She started the week by scoring 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field in YSU’s 81-69 win over Milwaukee. On Sunday, she had a game-high 23 points and a game-high 10 rebounds as the Penguins defeated Green Bay, 72-63. It was YSU’s first win at the Kress Center and the first time in program history that Youngstown State swept the season series versus Green Bay.
In addition to recording her eighth double-double of the season, Schlegel went over 1,000 career points during the game. She is the 18th member of Youngstown State’s 1,000 point club.
Youngstown State (13-12, 9-3) is in a three-way tie for first place with Green Bay (16-8, 9-3) and Wright State (20-7, 9-3). YSU controls its own destiny as they have swept Green Bay and will host Wright State on Wednesday, March 5. The Penguins return to action this Thursday when they host UIC (19-7, 8-5).
Galloway earned her second consecutive Freshman of the Week nod and third of the season after posting her third double-double of the season in Detroit’s game versus Wright State on Saturday. She scored 16 points and tallied a career-high 17 rebounds in the contest. She also had a career-high five assists in the game. It was her third consecutive game in double-figures.
Detroit is in action twice this week with both contests coming at home inside Calihan Hall. The Titans open the week versus Valparaiso on Wednesday, before hosting Youngstown State on Saturday.
Top Performers for the Week:
Kim Demmings, Wright State (Jr, G) - Demmings scored a season-high 36 points (15-of-26 shooting) in the Raiders win at Oakland on Tuesday. She followed up that performance with 30 points (13-of-26 from the field) in WSU’s win at Detroit.
Imani Gordon, Cleveland State (Jr., F) - Gordon tallied a double-double with 28 points and 15 rebounds at Milwaukee. She was 12-of-20 from the field in the contest. Earlier in the week, she grabbed 10 rebounds at Green Bay.
Katie Hannemann, UIC (Sr., C) - Hannemann scored a game-high 26 points to help lead the Flames to a win over Milwaukee. She scored 12 points during a 30-0 Flames run in the first half. It was her seventh career 20-plus point performance and second in the last three games.
Sharon Karungi, Valparaiso (Jr., F) - Karungi recorded a double-double with 22 points and 16 rebounds in Valpo’s win over Oakland on Saturday. She shot 73 percent from the field (11-of-15) and her 16 rebounds were a career-high.
Breannah Ranger, Green Bay (Sr., F) - Ranger was 6-of-9 from the field, finishing with 13 points in GB’s 59-56 win over Cleveland State on Friday. She finished 5-for-9 from the field, scoring 12 points in the Phoenix game versus Youngstown State.
Bethany Watterworth, Oakland (Sr., G) - Watterworth scored 26 points in Oakland’s game at Valparaiso. It was her sixth 20-plus point performance of the season and her 14th straight game in double figures.
Avyanna Young, Milwaukee (So., F) - Young averaged a double-double last week, scoring 16.3 ppg., and recording 11.7 rpg. She scored 15 points and tied a career-high with 16 rebounds against Youngstown State. She scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in UWM’s win over Cleveland State on Sunday.
Top Freshman for the Week:
Mariah Monke, Green Bay (Fr., F) - Monke made her first career start against Cleveland State and finished with a career-high 17 points and seven rebounds. She was 8-of-10 from the field against the Vikings and also added a block and one steal.
Jenna Hirsch, Youngstown State (Fr., G) - Hirsch scored 16 points, connecting on 3-of-4 three-point attempts and 5-of-6 free throws in YSU’s win at Green Bay on Sunday. She also had six rebounds and four assists in the win. She added five points, five rebounds and two assists in the win at Milwaukee.
Khayla Livingston, Cleveland State (Fr., G) - Livingston tallied 11 points and three rebounds for the Vikings in their game at Milwaukee on Sunday.
Bre’Zall Warren, Milwaukee (Fr., G) - Warren scored eight points and had a career-high seven rebounds against Youngstown State on Friday. On Sunday, she scored a career-high 17 points in the Panthers win over Cleveland State.
