Horizon League Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Ivan Kovalev, UIC, Junior, Almaty, Kazakhstan
Kovalev, the Flames' No. 1 singles player, was on top of his game this past Saturday as he posted a singles victory in the top slot and a doubles victory with teammate Andy Lockhart. Kovalev won his No. 1 singles match against Southern Illinois' Alex Nomicos in a 6-3, 6-2 affair. The junior also won his doubles match with Lockhart against Sergio Sanchez and Julian Angel Botero in an exciting 9-8(5) battle.
Horizon League Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Tayo Bailey, Butler, Junior, Chicago, Ill.
Bailey went 3-0 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles action last week, leading the Bulldogs to a pair of Horizon League victories. In Friday's win over UW-Green Bay, Bailey defeated Amber Murdoch, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 2 singles spot and teamed with sophomore Shaden Dowiatt to blank UWGB's No. 2 doubles team, 8-0. In Sunday's 6-1 victory over UW-Milwaukee, Bailey lost just two games at the No. 2 singles spot in her straight set win and once again teamed with Dowiatt for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Bailey posted the team's lone win in a Saturday loss to DePaul as well.
Horizon League Other Top Men's Performers
Mark Goldin, UW-Green Bay, Freshman, Bayside, Wis.
Goldin posted a pair of wins at No. 2 doubles along with teammate Mat Weiss against Weber State and Montana. Goldin also earned a comeback win at No. 6 singles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 over his Weber State counterpart.
Scott Hayden, Wright State, Senior, Wilmington, Ohio
Hayden went 1-1 in singles play on Saturday with a 7-6(6), 7-5 win over Ricky Servoss of Marquette before losing to Diego Zegarra-Ballon of Northern Illinois, 6-2, 2-6, [10-5] in the sixth spot. Hayden is 7-5 on the season and has been a key part of the 8-7 season for the season.
Horizon League Other Top Women's Performers
Sarah Galon, Cleveland State, Sophomore, Waianae, Hawaii
Galon recorded a pair of win at No. 1 singles the weekend, topping Robbie Barnett of Chicago State by a 6-2, 6-3 score before scoring a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Karen Najbert of Youngstown State. She also teamed up with Morgan Ungerott at No. 1 doubles and posted 8-2 wins over the Cougars and the Penguins.
Molly Smith, UIC, Junior, Leawood, Kan.
Smith extended her team-best singles winning streak to six with another outstanding performance this past Saturday against a tough Northern Illinois squad. The Leawood, Kansas native defeated Daniela Martinez 6-3, 6-0 in singles play, then teamed with Grace Gill-Morlis, who is currently on a five-match singles winning streak, to down Megan Brooks and Doris Delgadillo, 8-5, for UIC's sole doubles victory on the day.
