INDIANAPOLIS -- Green Bay junior Michael Tenzer and Cleveland State freshman Lauren Golick were voted the Horizon League Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Year, respectively. Tenzer collects his second-straight Player of the Year honor and went unblemished in conference play while newcomer Golick went 7-1, each at No. 1 singles.
All winners were recognized at the Horizon League Tennis Awards Banquet, held at the Weber’s Restaurant and Boutique Hotel in Ann Arbor, Mich. Thursday evening.
Jeffrey Schorsch of Valparaiso was voted the Men’s Freshman of the Year, while Golick added honors on the women’s side.
Detroit’s Bobby Cawood and Chelsea Girgash of Wright State were honored with the Herb Foster Sportsmanship Award at the banquet.
Leading Green Bay to its second men’s tennis regular season crown and a perfect League record, head coach Mark Thomas earned Men’s Coach of the Year accolades for the third time in four seasons. After taking a share of the regular season title and earning the No. 1 seed for the Championship, Cleveland State head coach Brian Etzkin garners Women’s Coach of the Year.
Tenzer anchored the No. 1 singles spot for Green Bay this season, going 6-0 in Horizon League play en route to a 15-6 overall mark.
In her inaugural season at Cleveland State, Golick went 7-1 at No. 1 singles, leading the Vikings to the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament and a share of the regular season title. Overall, Golick went 12-6 in her freshman campaign.
Along with Tenzer on the first team were Green Bay teammates Leopold Gomez Islinger and Howard Scott, while Cleveland State added Matt Kuelker. Jeffrey Schorsch of Valparaiso and Lauri Makikalli of Wright State rounded out the team.
Golick was joined by Cleveland State teammate Alex Bush and Diana Tokar of Milwaukee. Youngstown State added the trio of Margarita Sadovnikova, Marta Burak and Dominika Lackova to complete the first team.
The 2014 Horizon League Tennis Championships are being contested April 25-27 at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich.
