INDIANAPOLIS - Detroit senior Brigid Mulroy won the 22nd Annual State Farm College Three-Point Championship on Thursday evening at the Indiana Convention Center. The event was televised nationally on ESPN.
"My nerves were going crazy, but as soon as I stepped out onto the court it was pure adrenaline going through me," Mulroy said. "I wanted to do so well for everyone that came out to see me and am so happy with how I am ending my career at Detroit."
There were five stations around the arc with five baskets in each rack and the first four balls were worth a point each and the money ball was worth two. In the first round, Mulroy tied for second with Ashley Barlow (Notre Dame) with 20 points, while fellow Horizon League member Maggie McCloskey (Loyola) tallied 21 points.
Four athletes advanced to the semi-final round and Mulroy won that round with 20 points, while Barlow also advanced to the finals as she scored 19 points. In the finals, Mulroy won as she scored 16 points, which included ending with a money ball going through the net.
Then to decide the overall champion, the winner of the men's competition, Eric Hayes (Maryland) and Mulroy faced off. Hayes went first and ended with 22 points and Mulroy was close, but came up two points short as her last money ball hit the rim.
Mulroy had been ranked nationally in 3-point field goal percentage the entire 2009-10 season and currently ranks first (.505).
